I am wondering if the ticking some members hear at start up with the Pentastar is caused by the oil filter sitting so high on the engine and the oil draining back from the filter into the sump after shut down.

Yes, it's due to the lack of oil. Mine has a loud chattering/clanking for the first few seconds also.

My question is why do some do this while others don't?

Perhaps when I switch to synthetic & a Wix filter in 500 miles it will alleviate this symptom.

Mine has done the same thing since brand new... But I don't drive my Jeep alot... Only on weekends.. Sometimes not for two weeks... So naturally all the oil would drain down.. Then upon start up after that amount of time.. You will hear louder noises for 2-3 seconds! Then gone! And every start up after that during the day or wherever... Quiet! You will hear a light sewing machine sound when you put your ear to the wheel wells... But I would not worry about it! I just switched to Amsoil Signature Synthetic 5w-20 last week! And I must say... It was the easiest non-messy oil change I've ever done on any vehicle!

I drive mine every day, and it still clatters it every morning for a few seconds. Even after sitting for two hours there's a second of clatter after startup.

Our Jeep got a ticking sound every time we start it for about 2 seconds, even if you start it up 5 times an hour. After the 2 seconds, quiet as can be.

I think that since I never start it the lifters drain out and they chatter for about 1 1/2 seconds until they pump up. I hope we have hydraulic lifters or I sound dumb as a box of rocks... :doh:

If it was lifter bleed down then why don't all engines with hydraulic lifters do it, it has to be something other than that.

I didn't say I knew anything about the lifters in the 3.6. I only know that most all engines have hydraulic lifter and most don't tick at start up. I'm not knocking Chrysler or the 3.6 just wondering why some tick at start up and some don't. I have the 3.6 in my Jeep, love the motor and it doesn't tick at start up but I only have 300 miles on it if it starts ticking I may try different oil or filter and see if that makes a difference.

The timing drive uses four chains, each of which is a “silent chain link” design to improve sprocket engagement and cut noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). One chain, with a spring-loaded tensioner, drives the oil pump; three drive the camshafts. Primary and secondary camshaft chains use oil pressure controlled chain tensioners; the left secondary uses a ratchet, the right secondary and primary do not. So, I'll assume this is the explanation to why there is some initial start up noise? Because obviously some parts are oil pressure controlled? Like I said earlier, my louder start ups are only after extended non-use times.. Over a week or so. I probably would have NEVER even noticed it, if it weren't for me hitting the remote start while walking up to it one day....I tried to repeat the noise right after.... But it would not do it.. It does make sense however, the oil is on the bottom of the motor... Filter is on the top. And all the oil must go through the filter first... So when ALL the oil has time to make its way down... You'll get SOME 2-3 second noise... If that! Until the oil gets flowing!! Just my two cents
