I want to gain info from all the experienced jeepers- When would you recommend changing the timing belt/ chain on a TJ?

I have a 2002 Wrangler X 4x4 and 4.0 manual 5 speed with about 142,000. Nothing is wrong with the way it runs but I like to do upkeep maintenance BEFORE issues arise. Also, I don't know if I have belt or chain so is there a difference in how long one will last in comparison to the other?

The 4.0L has a steel timing chain that is good at least until the engine requires a major overhaul. Even then it is only replaced if it has stretched. Only the newer 2.4L and 3.7L engines use rubber timing belts. :)

I got bored and replaced the timing set in a 160k 4.0L engine. There was some improvement in low-end performance, but not enough to justify the effort. If had to do it over, I wouldn't bother.
