Hi All,


I currently have two Jeeps at the moment.


1998 Sahara, no lift, but larger Maxxis Buckshot II's.



2003 Wrangler, lifted, larger Goodyear Wrangler MTR's.


The 1998 runs straight, steers firm, doesn't drift, doesn't wobble, even with the larger tires on it.


The 2003, although it is lifted and the tires are a few inches taller, has been completely gone through. Control arms, ball joins, sway bar links, dampener, on and on.



The 2003, even with all new suspension bushings, components, everything checked for tightness, still is weird. It steers "loose", and there is a lot of correction. Hit a bump and hold on...you better be paying attention.


I am wondering now, is this just a function of having the lift kit and the larger tires on the 2003? Or is there something else I should be watching out for that I (or the shop) hasn't considered? As far as I can tell, everything has been gone through and replaced to make sure all steering and suspension parts are covered, new, tight, etc.

Thanks, I will check that. You don't experience any poor wear by running them low?


Nope in fact that is pretty much the suggested psi on average I’ve found for 35 inch tires on the forums. I had them at about 36 psi when I first mounted them and it was a chore to keep it tracking in a straight line.

Others mention performing a chalk test too, I never have but may try that out in the spring. Honestly not sure what that does except maybe to check the footprint of the tread contact on the pavement? There are YouTube videos you can find about it.

K, great info, thanks! Hopefully that will solve the problem. I have always wondered if different size tires contributed to this, if it was just the suspension system with play and flex after being modified, or if I've still got some kind of suspension parts I need to look at that I may have forgotten about.

Update on this.


Those Goodyear MTR's worked well for what I do with my '03, until we got dumped on with snow and then had the deep freeze here in Chi-beria. I knew the MTR's were worn and likely wouldn't do great in the mud anymore, but I never really thought they were bad on the street until the snow and ice came. No 4WD, no moving the Jeep. It would sling snow but it wouldn't move very far, just sit there. So, a trip to the tire store was in order.


I seriously considered replacing the MTR's with a new set of same, but the guy at the tire store talked me out of it. Being the more expensive tire of 5 or 6 I was looking at, his comment was "Those tires look great, but I really hate them. Everyone I've ever sold them to has problems with them." Uh-oh. He went on to explain that while they are great off road tires, it doesn't take much street running to ruin them and give all kinds of problems. Wobble, bounce, unbalance, instability, etc. Hmm. Interesting that he's mentioning the same issues I've been dealing with.



He talked me out of them and I went with a tire I was at first hesitant with...the BFG AT KO's. After a lot of debating, I pulled the trigger, and got them new installed. I was nervous.


WOW. What a difference! Not only did I plow through some snow over the weekend, but the Jeep is a bit quieter going down the road, less vibration, more stability, and just an overall increase in ride quality. I just hope that they last.



I still would like to see if I have a few things perhaps loose here and there, but wow, night and day difference. I've never experienced such a change in ride quality and handling just by changing the tires on a 4WD (excluding experiences with sports cars and motorcycles).
