^ That would be my guess. Also, I would NOT recommend even trying M/T's on ice. They're nothing short of terrifying. I'm a former rally driver, and have participated in eighteen ice races (MOST. FUN. EVER! :)), and I know how to drive on ice. M/T's are a great counter to any amount of skill- you simply have no grip.

If you're thinking of taking on ice, studded winter tires are simply the only way to go. If you can't run studs, a good set of winter tires and the CA-required chains are a solid bet. A set of 31" snows (265/70/17, is what I ran) would be ideal, and allow plenty of clearance- Mark W.
