A number of Arizona roads require 4wd and chains to traverse during the winter.

As per the sign on the side of the road? Or to make it passable. I live up here in Canada. And iv lived in the arctic for a period of time. Only reason to use chains around here with a 4x4 is if your runnin through 2-3 ft of Snow. Otherwise good studded snow tires are the way to go

If you need chains get a good set of V bar chains, they have a small V welded to the cross chain links, stay away from cable chains (cheaper) as they are a pain to install and don't dig very well. Just make sure the V bars fit properly, are tight when you install them, and use a bungee cord to tie up any loose links, recheck them after a few miles and I wouldn't go over 30 with them on.

Only problem with chains is when you get stuck your really stuck.

I've had that conundrum re Sahara & chains crossing the mighty Santiam Pass.....State Police requires "chains or traction devices"....during some winter storms....and it gets pretty slick up there even during 'normal' winter traffic.

my old faithful used ALMOST-once-a-decade Vbars don't fit and I'm loathe to risk either Wrangler damage or the fury of the State Troopers...

My local tire shop advised the only choice I had was either set of studs OR the thin cable chains. I borrowed a set of the cables for a couple trips but never needed them.

Don't know which choice I'd make if the need were 'often' vs 'almost never'.

I sure could have used some chains the other day when I couldnt get up a long slick muddy road out in woods. It was a long down hill that dead ended and up was the only way out. Many pine boughs, alder branches, and hours later I made it out.

I sure wished for chains that day.

I was hoping to buy some for my stock sport w/ 255s, but it looks like there are clearance issues eh? Damn. That wasn't very forward thinking on Jeep's part - a "off road" vehicle that can't take chains off the show room floor.

A lot of highway and interstate passes in the NW require chains at times too.

You could always do a simple 1.25" BL and that should give you clearance for the chains or you could run cables.

The issue with chains on the stock Sahara and Rubi is clearance between the sidewall and the sway bar links and control arms and front air dam. Sinister6 is running aftermarket rims with less offset which provide the clearance needed.

You can either change the rims or run wheel spacers to gain the clearance you need. A budget boost, won't do it. I'm using 1.5" wheel spacers.

V-bar chains are the way to go if you actually plan to use them. Nothing else works as well on ice.
