I've been looking for the IL state guide lines for tire coverage on trucks and i haven't found any thing. I'd like to take off my flares does anyone know what IL state requires to be covered or how much tire can stick out? with a link of the source where the info came from would be a huge help.
thanks,
dan

yo flex,

I know we have been back and forth a couple of times on the MCE flatties and how we're going to do the rear tubs. Anyway, I talked to a buddy of mine who's a patrolman in the Palos area; he said he never heard of a tire coverage law for passenger vehicles. I'm not saying that's gospel, but I really can't see getting pulled over for that. Inspections might be another story, however. I did see a rig in the Naperville area that had flats in the front and the rears were sticking a good 2" out of the rear tubs.

I also checked here:

625 ILCS 5/  Illinois Vehicle Code.

and found nothing on tire coverage for class 1 vehicles (any passenger vehicle intended for not more than 10 passengers.) There is a fender clause regarding "splash guards" for class 2 vehicles, which details tire coverage mandates, but this does not include passenger vehicles.

I'm going to do it soon as it warms up. Guess I'll be a guinea pig, but I'm not worried.

Just stay outta round lake/round lake beach I got a cop friend up there and they're pulling people over for anythin & everything no front plate...ect. but come spring I too will be pulling the rest of my rear flares off too. Maybe u'd be down for a badlands trip come spring? weekend thing I got a group of three going for sure and one maybe.... A 2000 TJ on 33's with a 4" suspension lift, a 2000 Ranger on 33's with 3 inches of lift and my tj on 33's and maybe a YJ on 35's with a coil spring conversion kit. we are all in the North west burbs... where bouts are you in IL?

If you ever get cited, make them write the exact statute you are violating. I'm telling you I couldn't find anything regarding tire coverage on passenger cars.

I live about 1/2 way between naperville and joliet, and I'd definitely be interested, as long as you guys don't mind mentoring an off-road newb. I've done some light trail riding and mudding but nothing heavy duty.

yeah we all have wheeled for quite some time now but the best way is to just go for it and find out what it can and can't do... i've only wheeled my Jeep once on 30" A/Ts. so as for wheeling with a Jeep i'm kinda newer too, plus now i'm on 33's. but we all always give our input on trail rides. I'l try to keep ya updated
