I am the new owner of a 2013 Sahara that I love! I am having an issue with the tire shine that the dealer put on. When It rains the grease leaks down onto the Sahara silver bumper and stains it. Any tips on how to clean it? Pressure washing doesn't work. I tried a vinegar solution but that didn't really work either. It does come off with a lot of elbow grease and some strong buffing but I'm just wondering if anyone else had this issue and if they found a better solution.

From what I've read, most of it will come off if you get on it right away. That seems to be a common problem as there are a lot of posts about it. Not sure if it is tire shine or just something in the rubber.

My silver insert will be either coming off, or getting plati-dipped right away. That is another way to "fix" the problem.

Try WD-40. That stuff will clean lots of stains. I've used it on everything from clothes to hard plastics. Worth a shot.

Remove the silver bumper liner? Kidding, but I do like it better all black.

I'd try some Greased Lightning or an equivalent degreaser.
X2 on the degreaser, prolly your best bet, short of removing the trim piece.

A cleaner wax should work from auto zone . Wd40 like another member said . Scratch out in a yellow bottle at auto zone works for things like this and it will not leave any marks on your paint

I don't think it's dealer tire dressing, it's just something off of a new Bridgestone tire. Whatever it is, it's a real b!tch to remove. I tried everything short of rubbing compound, and the only thing that worked was good ole elbow grease, like the OP said. There is still a faint trace of it if you look hard, because the stuff seems to soak into the clearcoat. If Jeep understood this, or cared, they would cover that small bumper area with peelable clear plastic from the factory, and instruct the dealers to leave it there until it's sold. Time is a factor with this gunk. I looked at a long line of Sahara's on a dealer lot, and every JK/JKU had the tire stains. Rant over! :)

yeah that's not from the dealer, it's from the factory. apparently it's the anti-seize grease on the spare lug bolts

If the stains were caused solely by lug bolt anti-seize grease, and not Bridgestone only tires, then there would still be an off-colored residue on all of the black bumpers too, albeit harder to see. Of course I've been known to be wrong, or so my wife says.


Whatever it is, Simple Green strips it right off easily.
I tried Simple Green, and you could hear that stain laughing at it. Maybe that dripping stuff sat on my bumper longer and soaked in, I don't know.

They all do come with a pastic wrap/cover from the factory. Leaving it on makes it worse as the water after a rain just sits there. We use a chemical stripper, kinda like bug and tar remover. It does the trick pretty quickly.

I had that happen with my wife's Nissan. It was even beyond my detailing skills to get out. My JK comes in two weeks. I have asked them to keep all exterior plastic on the outside. =)

Hello Pat, yes I've seen the loosely applied factory plastic. All I'm talking about is if a small, out of sight, area of decent clear plastic from the factory were to be left on the bumper at the dealer, only below the tire. Then, that stain stuff wouldn't be able get a toehold on the bumper in the first place. I'll take a few water and soap marks, that might get under the plastics edges, left over from the initial washing and rain over those stains any day.

There have been many threads regarding this problem over the years and nothing new, that I've seen anyway, gets tried to resolve it. Yes, some dealers will forget to remove the plastic went it's sold, but having the owners easily remove it is still a minor inconvenience compared to the alternative. Maybe a "Please remove" tab, like is used on clear protective covers for many products would be appropriate. Just a thought, O Jeep Master Pat.

I've had it, and have used that ICE "clay bar" liquid on it and it comes right off.


If you get a tire cover, it doesn't happen. It's a combination of road spray and the lugs on the tire carriers dribbling down liquid rust...tire cover helps

I had the same thing and Turtle Wax Spray on Bug and Tar remover took it off effortlessly. It comes in a green pump spray bottle. I sprayed it on and by the time I got the hose stretched to the Jeep it wiped right off.

We're mainly discussing the stains that bond to the bumper in the time period between Toledo and the sales day, which can be weeks or months. That's when the most concentrated of whatever it is drips off and sticks. :)

The original poster asked how to remove it, you were discussing/complaining about the time between Toledo and sales day.

Turtle Wax liquid clay bar removed my stains, even the ones I continue to get from, get this, road spray and water that runs through the spare on the back that drips on the plastic.

Each time, it comes off with minimal elbow grease.
