33's do not necessarily require lift. But that's because it's only one part of the equation. It's the width that causes the most issues.
Skinny 33's shouldn't rub on stock rims. I believe up to 265 wide. Beyond that I believe is where it begins, both rub and stuff under the fender at disco compression. That's where lift, aftermarket back space, spacers, etc become part of the equation.
