Hello all!

I wanted to show how everyone can install 4x6 speakers into the front of their TJ without purchasing an adapter and using the original enclosure and wiring. This was done on my 2003...it may be different for earlier year TJs.

Once you remove the plastic speaker grill (2 screws and the pop it off), you can remove the speaker assembly (4 screws). You end up with this.

Remove the 6 screws holding the speaker and tweeter in, and clip the wires near the back.

Push the rubber grommet through the hole and remove the pigtail.

I used my dremel to cut the plastic into a shape that would fit my Kicker 4x6 Coaxil.

Using solder and heat shrink, I connected the speaker wire to the original pigtail.

You can then install the grommet back in the hole and clip the plug on the back just like normal.

I dropped my speaker in with a bead of black silicone for a nice seal and screwed it into place.

This is what you end up with.

What's great about doing it this way is that you get to utilize a sealed enclosure for your front speakers for free!

If anyone is curious about the speakers, you can follow the Amazon link here:

Nice write up. I have an 03 as well and mine never had the enclosures like yours. I am running the 4x6 kickers as well and the sound is ok but I'm sure they would sound better in an enclosure. Are they factory enclosures on certain models?

The enclosures were part of the 7 speaker premium audio option usually found in Sahara models.

I replaced one of mine with a Sony 4" 2-way speaker, also mounted in the enclosure and compared the two. Even though the Sony was louder I refitted the old speakers as their sound was quite a bit better. I would not replace the split setup upfront with a normal 2 or 3 way speaker. Using a proper aftermarket split set is something else and should work nicely.

After seeing what I had in there, I wasn't sure if the Kickers would sound better. I hooked one up on one side before I made any changes to find out that it a more clear and crisp sound. Once I mounted them in the enclosures, it was hands down better.

By the way, I don't have a Sahara. It's an X...I do have the sub in the center console though...

Yes, premium audio was standard on Sahara models and factory option on the others. I'll look.into the speakers you used.
