I just posted a thread for 'buying a tj advice". I forgot about Tops - is is best to get both tops? I think I like the Soft Tops - but are there different ones - bikini, etc..? I see the 07s have the Freedom Top - I guess 3 pieces. My biggest concern is my kayak. I'm been researching racks for the roof. Could I have any kind of a roof rack for a soft top? Thanks for your help.

I would try to find a jeep with a hardtop first. Softtops are a lot cheaper than the hardtops and a hardtop on its own is quite high priced. I found my 00 tj with hard top for 13500 (sticker price) there was a similar tj with few miles more than mine same engine and everything but just with soft top and it was only 13000 so preatty much the only difference was the hard top for 500..

As the roof rack goes if it connects to the back bumper or to the body other than the top it will work. Many are back to the bumper and forward to the winshield just like roof lights would connect

I may be biased, but I know that I would never be happy with the hard top. triple88a does give good advice though.

Anyway, that freedom top seems to be pretty awesome. I wish I had one for my YJ.

I have an 05 tj. Run the hard top in the winter and a bikini in the summer. Sometimes I put the soft top on, but not often. My bikini is that sunrider with the tonneau for the back area (rear seat down) and a zip up back window behind the drivers seat (I'm only 5'8" and it's almost too close for even my seat adjustment). I wish I had one of those new hardtops with the removable piece and one of the soft tops with the fold back option - but can't rationalize it when my other tops are perfectly good.

Amerijeep does any 1 actually make a half hard top for TJs that you know of? ....Half top-Just the front seats are top then there is a window behind the front seats and then its flat back.

Just like this but it being hard top :)http://www.oman4x4.com/albums/diamondtop/DiamondTop2HalfDoor.jpg A moon roof also might be great :)
I don't believe there is a half hardtop for TJs. I have never seen one.

I did a quick Google and came up with nothin'.

IMO there is absolutely no reason to own a hard top. The soft top is great year round. This comes from someone whose temperatures range from +95 down to -30 and can get several feet of snow in a single day.
I'll tell you my reasons for owning a hard top in a random order
1. In my area where i live a soft top will be cut for fun
2. A soft top will be cut just because yours is better than the beater next house-jelousy
3. A soft top will be cut to get into a vehicle and steal something
4. It's quite quieter and confortable ride so now you can hear your music instead of the flappings of the soft top.
5. No chance of it ripping or falling off while you are driving therefore increasing safety dramatically.

any one else has some other reasons feel free to add them to the list.

When I first picked up my TJ I was looking to get a hardtop for it. After running the softtop and bikini top for a while I decided there is no way I will run a Hard top. It is extremely handy to be able to pull over and drop the top at any given time. Best is running no doors and a bikini top. Just my opinion of coarse.:D

I have the original soft top on my o1 sport and it doesn't flap at all. The one thing I didn't like is the old zipper windows in the front on my half doors. I got besttop sliders and through the old half door windows away.
