So..... I set down and copied and pasted and did a little color editing, from the TJ FSM's (full service manual)

"Can you?"

Yes you can but it takes money.

You can put what ever tranny you want in it if you have the resources and all the parts to make it happen.


What 4speed are you wanting to put in it?

I want to put a 350 in my 97 tj wrangler. I researched some and was told i needed to get a AX15 tranny. My question is does it matter what year it is and what jeep model it comes out of??? I know alot of folks have done this swap so i hope someone can help me. Local junk yard has a few I just want to get the right one. Thanks

Who told you that???

You can get adapters for the AX-15 to a GM350 motor but I wouldn't recommend it.

If your swapping in a 350 go with something stronger. SM465, 4L60 ...Some thing that will last behind that motor.

Thank you I emailed Chrysler for my info they sent me the forward gear ratios, and differentials, but not the reverse or the model of the trans

hi all,
just wondering if the ax-15 will bolt up to the my 2000 tj? my gearbox (nv3550 i believe) has shit its synchros and i can get an ax-15 for real cheap. fingers are crossed for a yes on this one........

The AX15 should bolt right onto the I6 motor. As it is the exact same one that is bolted to the NV3550

I would bet that you would want to grab the computer and harnesses too. Though don't quote me on that

The 10 spline input refers to the input shaft of the transmission that mates to the engine.

Here is my NV3550 input shaft while doing a clutch replacement.

And the 23 spline output refers to the rear shaft that mates to the transfer case.

Im new to this can i get a tranny from a cherokee or does it have to come from a wrangler. local junk yard is having a sale this weekend but dont have any tj's it is a 4cyl auto 97
