Hi, I have a 2003 TJ 4cly, 5sp. This am on my way to work, while starting from a stop light I let the clutch out and heard a slight bang. The engine runs fine, the clutch pushes in and comes out easy..as soon as I let the clutch out a slight whine noise is all that is heard. Jeep will not move in any gear. I had it towed to my driveway and will look at it Friday afternoon. Thanks for any help...

98,000 miles on orig clutch / some city...

check the differential and drive shaft. most likely your clutch is so worn down its too thin.

Clutches usually slip a whole bunch before they fully fail to engage. Was it driving fine before the "slight bang" or has it been slipping for a while? Try putting it in 4wd and see if it moves.

Jeep drove fine just before it stopped working. Clutch was not slipping or making any noise. I just tried it in 4wd and no go. Thanks..

When you try to shift from gear to gear, does it feel right?
Both engine off and engine running.

Buy and install a new Luk clutch kit from Dial-A-Clutch - Your LuK Clutch Kit Specialist which for around $150 includes the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and pilot shaft. For someone like me, it's a one day job with lots of breaks. For a young stud, it's a 4-5 hour job. You'll need an E-10 and E-12 extended torx adapter socket to get the two top bolts out that hold transfer case and transmission. :)

Ok, Thanks for all the replies...I just looked at it with my neighbor (who is a VERY good wrench) and it appears the bell housing is cracked on the transmission. We will pull it later today or this weekend.

At least the bell housing is replaceable separately. That it's cracked makes me suspicious something inside the clutch area let go and smacked the housing hard enough to break it. I'd have that clutch kit ready to go when you drop the transmission, odds are very good you'll need it.

I think clutch. I had a ford f-100 years ago. I let the clutch out and heard a bang, it wouldnt move. The clutch pedal still felt smooth. I towed it home and took it apart. Clutch had shattered and came out in pieces. Just my 2 cents. Good luck with it.

I would put a new clutch in while you have the bell housing off. Save you from doing it down the line.

If the bell housing is cracked I would check the motor mounts and also the transfer case mounts. Bell housing don't just crack! You need to find out why that happened.

Even when a bellhousing cracks, it doesn't go "bang" and not move - unless something really major let loose inside.

Be sure to check that crack carefully, often casting mold marks look like cracks.
