i just picked up a 92 4.0 5 speed for $2,000. its got 190,000 miles on with almost no rust at all. the motor seems to run great, but the tranny is giving me some issues. let me first say I know almost nothing about mechanics, but I am trying to learn and am very good at figuring things out. reverse grinds everytime, and shifting to third or fourth will grind sometimes. and downshifting to fourth or third will grind everytime. i've heard of synchromesh, do you guys think that might save it?...also, it makes a strange noise when i turn the wheel almost the whole way when im parking or backing out of a parking spot. the noise is similiar as if it would be in 4wd but its not and drives and turns smoothly otherwise. another thing i hear sometimes is a thumping noise that i think is coming from the back left, i only ever hear it when im at an idle or slowing down. what could that be?...the exhaust?? any suggestions would be great and i'm trying to learn how to do some of this stuff myself. i have friends with experience if i ever run into issues and my dads garage has about any tool i'll ever need. i just need a little advice what i should do with this thing. what would be some good things to tune it up a bit....i also noticed it is TERRIBLE on gas and burns a little oil. thanks guys I am lookin forward to start my jeepin!

Welcome to the forum. You might want to go to new member check-in and post this but break it down a little. Start with the most important issue and work from there. You've got a lot of questions and these guys are great at helping out. You can also use search to find a lot of answers. Again Welcome

To get reverse without grinding, try putting it in 4th first then right into reverse. (lines up the synchro's)

Also your clutch hydraulic line may need to be re-bled.

Check your transmission mount, for the thumping issue.

Also the track bar bushings may be causing the noise.

EDIT; welcome to the board, & the wonderful world of jeeping!

Remember, any parts you can scrounge from the junkyard will save you money for other stuff you have to buy new.

welcome. Few thoughts on your YJ... 1st all jeep make noise.. if they don't then well you don't have jeep.

2. as for the tranny, w190k its had a long life. I would first check the fluid, and see how it looks, smells, and feels. Dark is bad, burnt smell is worse, also feel for metal shavings. in some cases if you have a lot of shavings the tranny might need them in there to work at this point.. so just top it off with fluid.

3. sound when turning.. check your power steering fluid if ya have that. Might want to check and if needed replace the serpintine belt.

as far as the gas mileage have u done a tune up yet ie plugs wires and oil this might help with that if ur burning a lot of oil a cheap band aid is to use lucus oil treatment in ur oil the stuff looks like honey and will help seal the rings and gaskets up and it will work for awhile but if its too excessive u will have to address the prob eventually
