I found no credible information on this for a 2012 JKU so I asked Chrysler directly. Their response :

Re: Chrysler Group LLC Customer Assistance (KMM9052451V76167L0KM)

Dear Ken,

We found the information you were looking for and it is as follows:

The maximum trailer weight this vehicle can tow is 3,500 lbs.
Maximum tongue weight is 350 lbs.
Our records indicate this vehicle was equipped from the factory with a

Class II Receiver Hitch (sales code XFN).
According to available information, the factory installed Class II
Receiver Hitch should be compatible with a weight-distributing hitch.

Thank you again for your email. Should you require additional assistance, or have any new information to provide, please reply to this
email message or call 1-877-I-AM-JEEP (1-877-426-5337).

Sincerely,

So, short answer : Yes it is compatible. I replaced the hitch anyway, with a Drawtite 75515. Better design.
