I have a 1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ. I installed a new engine about 4,000 miles ago. I am looking at the possibility of having to use my Jeep to tow my boat next summer. My boat weighs about 3,200 pounds fully loaded. My tows to the lake will be 25 miles one way at max, most being less than 2 miles. I live in a hilly area. Anyone see problems with this? What are your experiences with this. I currently use my NIssan Titan to tow the boat, but I will be turning that in next spring as my lease is up. I will not be buying a new truck until the following fall, so I might need to use my boat to tow. I would never of thought to use my Jeep for this, but this past summer I saw people with smaller SUV's and even cars towing boats similar to mine. Can anyone offer advice? Thank you.

You are considering using a short wheelbase vehicle to tow 3200 lbs. Your engine and drivetrain will not have a problem with this, but you need to consider the fact that braking and control will be a problem. It could be done, but I, personally would not be comfortable with having the boat pass me while on the highway in an emergency braking situation.

It's been debated back and forth around here many times. Most of us feel that the Wrangler wheel base is just too short to be towing anything of significant weight. Nothing worse than having to stop quickly and having the setern of your boat come around and say hello.

Plus let's face it, braking technology in 1989 wasn't what it is today.

For regular road use you should be alright, but I wouldn't hit highway speeds, or tow long distance.

I see a lot of pessimistic responses on here, however no one has told THEIR experience with towing. I personally do not feel you will have a bit of trouble as long as you go manageable speeds and monitor the distance in front of you. If you can hook up trailer brakes it would help A LOT. I have pulled my 4100 pound RV about 4,000 miles over the past year and a half. I admit that my silverado is more comfortable, but I obviously choose the Jeep over the truck. I tow my camper @ a consistent 75 mph. This is one area that my diesel engine does not void the legitimacy of my Jeep and its abilities. lol! If you still have concerns, install an anti sway break, I have one installed on my RV. Although not necessary for what you are doing if you plan on hitting the highway for long trips I would defiantly make the investment.

Hate reviving an old thread, but my experience with towing in my Jeep ('94 YJ 4.0L pretty much stock) varied significantly from reevesdieselyj's. Just driving around town, I had a little tent-trailer, couldn't have weighed more than 2000lbs, I could really feel it in the brakes. I would hate to be descending a mountainous pass with it behind me. But the engine had enough power to pull it, only stopping...

On the other hand, I did take a small 14' aluminum fishing boat up into the mountains, loaded with some camping gear and it towed fine. It was a little hard to get it into 5th, even on flat ground. Coming back down I also made sure to let the engine/tranny work to help slow me down.

If it's a pretty much stock jeep, I would look at your owner's manual, that should give you some information on what weights you can tow, and let you figure out a "safe" towing capacity for your jeep.

Just my 2cents :redface:
