I'm thinking about purchasing a travel trailer to tow w the jeep. It's a 2010 JKU, automatic. The tow capacity is 3500lbs. The trailer I'm looking at is 2800lbs dry. I really don't know if it be worth buying and if the jeep could pull it w out straining too much. Any feed back is welcome. Thanks

No xp with an auto but I routinely tow close to the limit with my 12 JKUR with no issues. Towed the same trailer with my 09 2 door Rubi (technically over limit, don't want to get into that convo) and never had any issues with it either.

Both pulled better than my wife's vehicle with a higher tow cap. Pulled it from Biloxi MS to San Antonio, to central MO, central IN and back and ran like a champ.

I've heard of over heating issues with the auto though. Nor sure if 2010s were included in that. With that exception I would say you should be fine. Happy campin!

Should not be an issue. Not same apple, but towed my lil pop up to Calico and back with no issues. Cold have used more gear on grades but never got over 210*. Kept her in the 55-60mph range and left plenty of stopping room in front of me.

I pull a similar coleman tent trailer. It has a King size bed, full bed. I've gone up to Big Bear and back again, no problems. I don't even have the brake controller, haven't needed it.

We pulled a 16ft trailer to Hungry Valley last month with our 2012 JKU, it's 3650 unloaded. We were very careful and didn't load much in it and the Jeep towed it really well, even over a pretty good grade out of Tehachapi.

We did decide we will never take it again, just don't like pushing the envelope that much. We looked at the new Lance lightweight trailers a couple weeks ago and decided on the Lance 1575. The dry weight of it is 2575 with a GVWR of 3500. We're confident it will tow without any issues after making it with the 16 footer.

I would think if you just don't overload it and try to stay on the light side you would be okay. Any chance the seller will allow some sort of test-tow just to be sure it's good. Maybe a freeway on-ramp, a hill of some sort and testing the stopping ability.

My dad always said it wasn't the going he worried about, it was the stopping. Lol

What brand is the trailer your looking at? I've been researching the heck out of them and Lance is my 99% decision. I just wish I had color options so I could get a big orange stripe on it.

Your Dad was right. It's not that the Jeep wouldn't pull more weight. The Pentastar V6 has a higher tow rating on several of our vehicles. It's the weight of the Jeep that limits your tow rating. If the trailer weighs as much as the Jeep, it will push you right down, or off, the road. Plus, the Jeep doesn't have the Heavy Duty Trans cooler, radiator, and alternator, that's to be found in a truck or van that's to be used for towing. As a salesman, it's my duty to job rate vehicles for people who plan to tow. Everybody please, do yourselves, and those of us who share the road with you. Do not tow more than what your vehicle is rated for. Not only will it kill your vehicle. It's dangerous to you, and everyone around you. Just saying.

We found one 3000lbs w a slide, bunk beds cuz I've got 2 small boys w a full bathroom for the wife of coarse. Lol. I'll be picking it up this coming weekend if all goes well. If not I might be going to the calico run. Playing it all by ear really. Again... U guys rock and thanks for the info

I'll have to look up that brand, don't think I've seen it.

The Lance has the dining slide out that converts to a queen bed and then another ready made queen bed. I too insisted on a bathroom, it has a nice one except no sink. I guess to keep the weight down you don't get the extra sink. I'm fine with that since this will just be for Jeep runs or my daughter & her husband to use.

We have a 32ft Motorhome with all the extra stuff, just can't take it everywhere and Mike can take the Lance hunting. No hunting with my motorhome :nonono:

Lol. I understand that. It's really sweet. 19' with a sink in the restroom. This too will be for runs only. It was the only way I could convince the wife I needed a jeep (toy) haha.

Just make sure you get good brakes on the trailer. We switched from surge drums to disc's on the 20 foot boat we tow and it was a huge difference. We only tow a couple of miles on surface streets to the boat ramp but it really made a huge difference.

The trailer comes w electric brakes. So I'll be putting a brake controller on it as well as sway bars. My only main concern was is it going to totally bog down on grades. I understand it won't be hauling butt but will it die on its face. The jeep already has a banks intake and throttle body spacer. I'll prob finish it w a exhaust system too to open it up.

You dont say what gears or tires you have. I have 4.88 and 35's I would highly recommend gears before anything under the hood or exhaust. went 4.1 to 4.88 and made a huge difference.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure the gears. But I believe 373 or something like that w stock 31". I'm new to this jeep thing. This is my first one

Tongue Weight

I don't know about the automatic, but, otherwise there should be no problem, realistically.

Legally, however, it can be a HUGE problem (I've heard) if you're in a crash - In Nevada normal insurance won't cover you if you're outside the ratings. The "tongue weight" includes anything in the Jeep that adds to the rear axle weight.

You can look into a weight distribution system to mitigate the tongue weight effect. Good luck weighing the tongue.
