Can the gladiator handle towing my JKUR on 37s that I load onto a car hauler ? Or is it too much weight and I better stay with a full size truck. Please help

Depends on how much your JKU and trailer weighs. I believe 7,800 lbs is what the gladiator can pull.

5,000 # JKU and 4,000 # trailer shouldn’t be done

But a 4,500 JKU and 2,000 # trailer can be done

I would not want to pull that much weight with the current powertrain. 3.6L would struggle even if it is rated to tow 7800 lbs. It is pretty easy to get a jkur on 37's weighing upwards of 6000lbs. I weighed my jkur and it was at 5400lbs.

If it was flat ground, you had good surge brakes or installed an electric trailer brake controller, I wouldn't see too much of an issue with it. In mountains? I love my Gladiator and all, but that's a pretty decent load, and even if it "technically" is within it's specified tow rating, I wouldn't want to abuse it like that.

The Gladiator's towing capacity varies greatly depending on the model. The advertised capacity of 7,650 lbs only applies to the Sport with automatic transmission. Towing capacity is 7000 lbs on the Rubicon with auto and 4500 lbs with manual. The Overland's towing capacity is 6000 lbs with auto. The towing capacity of the diesel will reportedly be less than with the 3.6.

The 7,650 max towing is only on Sport + Automatic + Max Towing package. Very specific combo.

The Gladiator tow rating meets SAE J2807, so the truck can and will safely pull that amount of weight. What you need to be careful of is staying inside your GCWR and GVWR numbers. It's easy to run out of payload before you run out of towing capacity, ESPECIALLY on the Rubicon and Overland trims.

Easy answer,,, stay with a full size truck. Any well equipped 1/2 ton will out tow a JT.

I disagree. My 2013 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 V8 had a tow rating that was 50 lbs. more than my Gladiator. It also had a payload capacity 250 lbs. LESS than my Gladiator. Full size does not equal heavier duty.

For all intents and purposes, the Gladiator Max Tow IS a 1/2 ton truck. And, the Gladiator got it's rating meeting SAE standards, which a lot of full size trucks didn't (and maybe still don't).

Good one,, 6 year old truck worth 1/2 what a JT is going to cost. The JT is going after the Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado market. All the 1/2 tons with Max tow are rated over 10K. For the cost of a new JT you can get a slightly used 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel or a new 1/2 ton 4x4 rated to tow over 10K.

And if your only goal was maximum towing capacity, you'd be on the right track. But since he's considering a Gladiator, that's probably not his main consideration. I personally have a 2500HD Chevy big block truck to tow my 5th wheel trailer and haul the monster loads. The Gladiator isn't designed or intended to do that job. It will tow, and it will haul, but it's primarily a Jeep, designed for off road fun and to do many different things fairly well. It's versatility is what made it attractive. Jack of all trades, master of none. It's not a hard core wheeler, it's not a massive tow machine, it's not a heavy weight hauler. But it does a little of each of those, and looks good in the process.

I must say, I took a look at a JT Rubicon yesterday while waiting for my JK to be repaired, and it was impressive but the tow rating was a letdown.

If I needed to tow my JK or a horse trailer (which my wife wants, and horse to put in it) I'd get a RAM pickup instead.

Also, $62K for a JT Rubi? WTF?

Use the Build and Price tool on Jeep's website and you can easily get a JL Rubi to hit $60K also. MSRP on my nicely-equipped JT Rubi was $54K.

Double WTF! My 2014 Rubi was $40k. I just configured a new JLUR to match and got $47k. Guess I won't be trading her anytime soon...

And I paid less than $8K for my Scrambler in 1982. I got about triple that when I sold it again recently. I also paid less than 20 cents per gallon for gas 50 years ago. I paid around $37K for my '13 JKUR...and I got $35K on trade 3 years later. Not much is going down in price these days. So what's your point?

Got the opportunity to tow 6,300 lbs. on a 160 mile trip this past weekend. The trailer I was using had surge brakes.

Stopping quickly was no problem. Nothing got out of sorts.

Handling was good. The Gladiator didn't wander all over the road or anything. It handled like you'd expect a truck to handle with a load behind it.

Acceleration was typical. It's not a rocket ship 0-60 with 3 tons behind it, but it does get up to speed adequately and once there, it'll hold speed easily. I set the cruise control at 55 and never saw the speedo dip more than 1-2 MPH. We've got plenty of hills here in KY. They didn't slow the truck down at all.

At the end of the trip, the dash showed 12.4 MPG. I had used a half tank of fuel. I ran the rest of the tank out not towing and the dash finished the tank showing 14.0 but hand calculation showed 13.8. So, the 12.4 while towing was probably right on the money. Very impressive.

This truck is the real deal. On level stretches of highway, 6k in tow, it would even use 8th gear. Very very impressive.
