Has anyone had an issue with ripping off their trailer connector while wheeling?

I have a 4 & 7 pin connector that sits no lower than the bottom of my Receiver. I have tore it off twice now. The first time it pulled the screws through the plastic but was still in one usable piece. The second time it destroyed the housing itself. I've just wired in a new connector and thought about mounting it up underneath, but it would sit too close to the factory muffler and time was tight for our last camping trip.

Thoughts/Ideas?

(Obviously, the tow bar isn't there when wheeling!)

Move it up higher and go through the bumper. Possible add a skid plate to protect it. I have ripped off a few on trucks through the years. If you just do the 7 wire round there are adapters for the 4 wire plug.

I have the AEV Rear Bumper. I'd rather not cut through the steel.
I'm still thinking of mounting it horizontal in the forward face of the bumper.
But the muffler would have to change. I'm worried about the exhaust droning while towing the camper.
