I bought a 93 wrangler about a month ago. I have been going through it to get a good starting point of knowing what has been maintained on the vehicle. Well, I just changed the fluid in the manual transmission with Royal Purple's Max Gear 75/90 synthetic gear oil. Now the tranny isn't shifting as well as it was. It's harder to down shift when coming to a stop. Feels like synchronizers, but why after I changed the fluid? I didn't have any indications before the fluid change. I put in around 3 and a half qts. of fluid. Any thoughts?

I went on to Royal Purple's web site and looked up the lube specs and that is what they recommended. I drained it out today and put in regular gear oil. I only drove it a couple of miles today but it already was down shifting better.

Strange, I have it in mine, I could never tell the difference from the old oil that was a synthetic too.

I have a theory I'm going to test. Before I changed the fluid I had a slight leak between the rear of the engine and the front of the transmission. I just figured it was a rear main seal leak. I was going to change that next spring, but after I put in the Royal Purple the leak looked a lot worse. I reached up and touched some and smelled it and it was gear oil. So my theory is that the Royal Purple is so slick maybe more of the fluid seeped between the seal than the regular gear oil was doing and got on my clutch, making it not engage completely while the engine is under load. After installing the regular gear oil I didn't notice as much on the bottom of the transmission this morning. I'm going to take off the inspection plate at the bottom and spray some brake cleaner on my clutch and see it that will clean off the clutch and make a difference.

not to high jack this thread but i have a hard time shifting mine. The tranny downshifting goes hard into second like you have to pull hard then shifting down into third you have to double clutch or else it will just grind like crazzy even going into third it grinds you have to wait a while.

But do you guys think my clutch slave cylinder i forget what it is called ha could not be working the whole way were the clutch is still sticking a little because climbing hills whe i push the clutch in sometimes a split second later it will like let loose like it is sticking so before i spend the money i would like some assurence because mine shifting is a little scetchy.

But to add to this subject i changed my tranny with 75w-90 valvoline but should probably be changed again due to the grinding of gears.
