Howdy,
Im new to the forum but am here with a question about a noise before i go start buying parts.

First off i have built an 87yj with a 83mercedes om617 5cyl turbo diesel with an NV3550 trans from a 04 wrangler..
My transmission is making a noise i believe and its driving me nuts

so here are the symptoms;
1. chattering noise while at idle, but when i push the clutch in just a little it goes away.

2. Chattering noise is still there when driving but not as pronounced of a rattle while sitting still.
Im presuming its the throw out bearing making that noise, but asking any way.

next this is a different rolling/chattering noise(most worried about)
1. rolling chattering noise when moving, expected with a diesel sounds like a ford trans. and is not the same noise coming from bellhousing.

2. when clutch is pushed while coasting and any speed above 10mph the noise does not go away, but makes a loud rolling/chattering noise.
it also makes the noise while accelerating but sounds more like a cup of marbles.
3 the noise still continues even if the jeep is in neutral while coasting. and even if i push in the clutch.
:banghead:

this noise sounds like its coming from the trans, maybe the x-fer case but im not sure.
Any one else having this problem or have any ideas, Im trying to gather info before replacing a bunch of bearings.
thanks
Sam

It could be your tc. That has a big chain in it that can get stretched out over time and make some racket. I would put it up on jackstands then put it in gear and climb under to pinpoint it

Sounds like a throughout bearing to me.
Yeah but that he referenced separately like one coming from the bellhouse, and something else coming from further back. He probably needs a new throwout bearing. Although, mine made noise after I put my transmission back in last time and then shut up after about 1 month.

I should also let you know when I put in my AX15 it rattled like that and made a racket like you are describing for a while. Mostly louder at higher speeds, but stopped after a few thousand miles and 2 fluid changes. I have had to rebuild my TC though too from worn out chain rubbing on the case. That was noisy as well, but that noise changed more when I hit bumps.

Mocoyj, There is noise coming from the trowout bearing yes, but i can get it to go away when i push the clutch all the way in or partially.

OverkillYJ,
If it is the chain would the noise, fluxuate in sound " putting marbles in a can and rolling it around" when i push the gas to cause the engine speed and trans speed to match it goes away, but let of it comes back, it also comes back when i accelerate and even when i put the trans in Neutral or push the clutch in.

One thing i have not tried is to put the x-fer case in Neutral while rolling down the road, the noise is very much louder at speeds above 35 so i have to be going fast enough to keep the rear drive shaft rolling. dont think its very safe but it might be one way to check

I have an NV3550 but my build is not far enough along to know about noise issues personally. However, when researching the NV3550 noise is a major complaint and generally fixed by changing transmission fluid. Based on everything I was able to locate I am planning to run Royal Purple 01512 Synchromax High Performance Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid. Some swear that it is like a day and night difference in noise level.
