Recently purchased the third jeep for our family. Another 97, this time with the 4.0 and auto tranny. The rear bumper was taken off. Just a quick question.....anyone still running the double tube bumpers on front and rear, and if so, show me some pics please. Thanks.

We have the double tube bumper with the hoop on the front. We really like the looks, but I am having a tinge of buyers remorse. I was just looking into tow hooks for the front end so I could start off roading, but according to a lot of posters on this forum. My smittybuilt tube bumper is a POS only good for mall crawling (lol, but kinda cry, cry, cry) Who knew? Not me. Live and learn I guess. :) Anyway, I still do like the classic look of the tube bumper. I'm not sure what I plan to do about the tow hooks, but I do plan on rounding out the rest of the Jeep with tubes.

I wouldn't go with tube bumpers. While they have that 'old-school' look some like, the tubes can get in the way and cause problems when you go to mount tow hooks and a winch.

Front tube bumper from Smittybilt with the raised winch plate. Rear tube bumper also from Smittybilt.

Yup, I am actually thinking of losing my tube bumpers and getting something better. I was over at my local 4WD shop today asking about how I can do some recovery points on this bumper. Basically, I can't!! The metal just won't support the force that would be placed on it if I had to yank on it for recovery. So I need something now that is going to be functional and serve a purpose on the trail.

I don't know anything about the tube bumpers, but couldn't you just put a strap around the tube/tubes when needed for recovery? Or are the bumpers too weak for that?

Their too weak for that. If you hit them into a small rock they will bend or dent.

Nope. They're really thin steel and the tubes will likely buckle.

I have the same issue only the tube bumpers came with the jeep when I bought it. I too like the look and the wife is not about to let me drop more money on the jeep right now to buy a new bumper. Can't do hooks on the top or the side due to the bumper and the bottom can only do one side due to the steering motor mount on the driver side. The passenger side I notice a large hole already there so going to fine an oversized large d-ring and bolt it to the frame there and basically just live with only having one recovery point on the front. I figure worse case if I can't get it with that side I will just go to the rear and pull it and go another way.

This is my problem. Got my Tj and it had a rear tube bumper, the tow hook wouldn't fit with it. So I'm stuck with no extraction point back there for the time being.

I have an old smittybilt tube bumper on mine. I'm not sure what it's off of, I got it for a song and a dance on cl and fabbed up some mounts for it. As far as recovery goes as long as you've got tow hooks that are attached to the frame and not the bumper I don't see the problem. I haven't bonked mine against anything but I don't imagine it being very strong.
