I have a '91 inline 6 manual rebuilt engine with 8k on it and no cat. I bought it as is so I don't have much data on the rebuild. But there is a distinct smell of I burnt gas from the exhaust. Also no smoke, no oil leaks. Compression test came out 1-153, 2-155, 3-160, 4-160, 5-155, 6-152.
The engine is not carborated either. So question is, what do I do?

Sounds like your running rich.
Whats your engine temp?
Have you changed out your O2 sensor?
Full tune up?

Runs fine. Poor gas mileage tho. Approx 10-11 city, 14 highway. Full tune up was done. O2 sensor was not changed.

The job of the catalytic converter is to burn off any unburnt fuel vapors before they leave the exhaust system. So that could be the casue.

Yes but the cat can only do so much. If your running rich it can't handle that. Change O2 sensor and the temp sensor on the t stat housing. Make sure your engine temp is around 200-210.
