My jeeps largest current problem is rust. There's no holes in the body yet but it'll get there soon if I'm not careful. So I'd like the opinions of those who have done it. I'm probably gonna have it in a shop to do it just because I don't have the tools/time for that kind of job and would be worried about screwing it up.
For those who have gone this route how did it turn out? Pros/cons?

With a wire brush and some cans of undercoating, one can do himself a really nice job if they take their time.

Yeah I was looking at por15 but it seems like the process would take a while. I live in florida so salt isn't a problem, I probably wouldn't need anything that extensive. What arr cheaper, preferably spray on alternatives?

I think it would be best to just get the thing powder coated by a professional. I had a piece that was rusting a little so I had mine coated and it has been perfect ever since. Its pricey, but it lasts a long time and is definitely worth it.

I have a 2010 Wrangler in great shape (20,000 miles on it). Although I don't really have rust issues, I wanted to make sure it stayed that way, especially here in NY with road salt. I dropped off my vehicle this morning at the Jeep dealer for the Mastershield treatment. First, Rust Inhibitor-a fogging spray method, wax based which protects from the inside out penetrating crevices, cavities and other rust-prone areas for maximum protection, forming a water proof, salt resistant seal. no drilling required. Second, Undercoat -black wax-based formula which seals the underside against road salt, dirt and stone and gravel abrasion. Forms a "blanket" that helps insulate your vehicle from the heat and cold and acts as a sound deadener for a quieter cabin ride. Total cost is 379.99 plus tax. I've read many different opinions on this but for me it is worth it. I plan on keeping this Jeep for a long time and I want to make sure it is in great shape. I guess I could have attempted it myself with products purchased from home improvement stores but I look at it this way. The price was reasonable and the dealer most likely knows what they are doing much more than me when it comes to application. My time is also worth something and to pay this amount to not buy the supplies, do the work, and feel confident that the job is done right, it seemed worth it to me.

I bought mine brand new, and that was the absolute first thing I had done to it (it didn't even have 1 mile on it).

I highly recommend having this done. Mine came with a paint treatment, interior scotch-guard, and body insulation (doors, panel cavities, etc.) - to help dampen road noise.

I agree. I just got a quote from a local shop and for $350, it includes the rust inhibitor and 3M undercoating. For the price, seems foolish for me to attempt the project as I have no idea what I am doing and could end up screwing up and causing more expense down the road.

I just bought a 2011 with 15k miles and this is a huge worry for me. My dad just had to have his whole frame rebuilt on his 2005 because it rusted through. He also had huge holes in floor boards under the pedals.

Since I live on the side of a mountain in Massachusetts salt is everywhere in the winter.

Has anyone closed the holes in the frame behind the front wheels. If you turn your tires the water/salt shoot right into the large hole and then goes into the frame on the inside with no way out.

The guy that just rebuilt my dads frame just welded a plate over that hole....

Any thoughts?

I plan to use a wirebrush on a drill (to remove accumulated rust) and add another coat of rust paint (tremclad) spray myself on the underbody surfaces, also using a rubberized spray on the inner steel fenders and plus take to a local shop that does krown rust proofing for inner body panels atleast once every year or two (weather/road salt pending). For the price of few cans, a few hours of work plus a pro doing where I can reach for a little over 100$, I'd say its worth it if you live in a problematic salt/road area like I do :/

Best time to do it is now before fall weather gets into full gear. I'm just waiting for the next dry day as I don't have access to an indoor garage to work in.
