What kind of speakers would anyone recommend to upgrade the stock? I know you can throw 5 1/4" in the front and 6 1/2" in the sound bar, but what kind of depth speakers do I need to put them in the sound bar? I was looking at Infinity Kappas and Polk Audio 531. I can get a great deal on the Polks, significantly less than the infinitys, and the polks do come with a slim speaker if I do need a thinner one for the sound bar. What should I do?

Yeah.. the typical head unit is only about 12Watts RMS per channel as opposed to 25Watts RMS per channel on most aftermarket ones. And the peaks are much higher as well...20W vs 60W....
And most factory speakers have paper cones and are rated at about 40W max. Its amazing what a $100 head unit and $200 worth of speakers ($100 a set) can do for sound quality... and that is a really cheap sound system... I had well over $1500 in my Civics sound system.

most, but not all 6.5"s will fit in the soundbar. you may need to try more than one pair, but from what i understand, the Polks fit perfectly. i got my 5.25" dash speaker adapter from www.mjmautoinnovations.com for $13 shipped. for the minimal cost, it was just easier to buy them than try to desgin my own.

haha well they ased what kinda speakers, people gave their opinion, and what you want now is just a different size,
my recommendation would be to go to crutchfield and put in that size and find what ur willing to spend and thenm post three or four and they will tell you if they are good or bad

as said above the stock HU suks. I mounted 2nd sound bar on mine that has 2 6x9s in it while the stock soundbar i moved to the front so now i'm in a perfect box with a speaker in every corner. It did sound better than stock but still didnt make much difference. Now with the new HU its amazing so the fiirst thing i would do is buy a HU and then look at speakers. (i had sony xplods 6.5s in my old car.. waste of money so skip over those)

the best thing you can do is shop around at local audio dealers and actually listen to different brands. then go online and buy them cheaper. you can look online all you want, but without listening to them, you have no idea what you're getting.
we can sit here and say, brand x, y, and z, are good speakers, but brand a makes crap. thing is, while x, y, and z may be quality speakers, they might not have the sound you're looking for. everyone hears something different.
for instance, Polk, Infinity, and Kicker are all good brands and make quality speakers. i think polk lacks in their highs while their mids are nice. i think infinity's lack in their lows while their highs shine. i think kicker is a great all around speaker. that is what I think and hear. you will hear something totally different.
a lot of stuff out there is quality, but they all sound different.
also take the rest of your stereo into consideration.....if you are not running or will not run a sub, you will want a good all around speaker. you will need strong hi's and you will need decent low end. if you are running a sub or plan to get one, focus on the hi's. look for a strong, big tweeter. your quality low end will come from the sub, so you really should not worry about the low end from the speaker.

well I do run a sub I've heard very good things about the infinity kappas and think that I will run those when I get the pods. I HATE sony speakers I will never run those pieces of shit again in any car I own they sound like someone took a bag of cans and rattled them around then stepped on them. (can you tell I've had personal experiance with them) ran them in my dodge for about 1.5 weeks when I had it, then took them out and sold them to this guy who you think just knocked up the daughter of the CEO of sony.

Well guys and gals, this is my first post on this site.
I recently bought a 2005 Wrangler X soft top, 4.0, 6 spd with a 4" body lift, 12.5 X 33" BFG MT's and chrome tube bumpers and nerf bars. I got it as a second vehicle (a.k.a. a toy). It's my first jeep, and I absolutely love it! So does my wife and my two young daughters!
The only thing I was disappointed with was the factory sound system. Between the road noise with the MT's, the puny stock speakers and the low power CD player, I had to raise the volume nearly all the way up just to be able to hear it. At that point, the sound distortion became terrible.
I found a great deal on some Polk Momo 525's and 650's on ebay. They were brand new and I got them for less than half of retail. I had planned all along to get a new HU, but tried the speakers first to see if the sound was any better...As I had expected, it really wasn't.
My girls have been spoiled with having a DVD system in my truck and one in my wife's van, so I decided to continue the tradition and put one in the Jeep as well.

I knew there would still be very little bass response, even with the quality Polk speakers, so I also added an infinity Basslink II subwoofer and 4 channel amp; http://www.crutchfield.com/S-XDmZLp8mlRK/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?search=basslink&i=700BASS4CH
Finally, I installed a 7" TFT monitor to the back of the center console for the kids to watch movies on.
I am actually astonished at the quality, fullness and clarity of the sound from this setup. It totally surpassed all of my expectations. 75 mph on the Interstate with the top down and I can easily hear every note and each word of the lyrics, not to mention actually feeling the bass.
I realize this is somewhat of an elaborate setup for a Jeep, but it sure makes driving it that much more fun...The whole family agrees!
I guess the whole point of this rant is that with the right speakers, HU and amp(s), driving a Jeep doesn't mean having to sacrifice being able to listen to(and enjoy) your music while on the road.
By the way, the Polk Momo 650's fit perfectly in the sound pods. All I had to do was make new screw holes to mount them. I also fabricated some speaker adapter plates out of some thin aluminum sheet for the dash to install the 525's where the 4x6 speakers were. Perfect fit.
