US Forest Service trails

I am thinking of taking a trip to the Badlands and Buffalo Gap this May. The US Forest service has their online interactive map. I see there are a lot of >50" vehicle trails in the area. Looks mostly out-n-back trails.

I am a beginner to jeeping, but have lots of experience backpacking & wilderness canoe-camping.

Are there any places that are must-see or places to avoid/beware of?

Also what do people do for maps while out in the field? I don't trust the online interactive map while I'm out there.

Some of the Forest Service Offices have paper Motor Vehicle Use Maps; give them a call.

paper maps are always a good option. But I use onX off-road app on my phone, you can download 150 mile chunks of area including all the trails for offline use. I have almost all trails in california downloaded for offline use
Get the app for your phone. TopoMaps. Pay the subscription, its worth it. Especially if you have iphone connect in your jeep, you can display the map on your display.

I'm also going to that area in June from Texas. I use GaiaGPS, and it has several map layers you can use. I usually just buy the year subscription because I believe it's worth it to plan any overlanding trips. I have researched a lot of that area the past few weeks, so if I can offer any assistance hit me up.
Very good. I called the local Medford USFS office and got set on the right path! The USFS has the "interactive map" which is junk for planning purposes. The kind lady pointed out that the MVUMs are the most accurate way to know what roads/trails are available for Jeeps. And the MVUMs are available online so that helps greatly.
