For those that have done V8 conversions, how did you arrive at your exhaust system?

I am doing a SBC and anticipate that I will use a Y pipe set up from the headers (inside the frame variety) with a muffler in something near the original position above the skid plate and single exhaust out. I anticipate running 3 inch from the Y pipe through to the back end.

Over on the Hot Rod Forum they seem to favor buying bends and straights to make you own custom set up. Not sure that any of them would make a Y pipe but I don't think I can run a true dual exhaust inside the frame given the limited space by the fuel tank.

Local muffler shops seem to be reluctant to make custom exhaust systems. Perhaps if I convince them it is for off-road use only they might but I am not sure about their fabrication abilities being any better than mine.

we build our own..we use mid 60's type corvette 2 1/2 inch ramhorn manifolds,donut s,bends,straights,then either flowmasters or glasspacks,then usually just turn them down in front of the axle

Harleydragon, do you make a Y pipe to connect the two before the muffler, use a dual inlet muffler, or just run dual exhaust? If you run dual exhaust how do you clear the transfer case on the driver's side?

I run straight duals..on our v8 conversions we use a complete chevy running gear,including axles so the transfer case hangs out on the passenger side..but regardless,I just look at it and run it as necessary

I have a TJ I put a 350 in, I used "shorty hugger" headers and a local shop made a y to connect under the passenger side of the oil pan then runs out the back with a single inlet flowmaster 40 under the skid plate. I wanted duels but there is only 4 inches or so between the frame rail (where the fuel lines are) and transfer case. I wish I would have had him use a dual inlet muffler, I think there is room. I second what harleydragon said, ramhorn manifolds are what I'm using then just take the driver side under the shallow part of oil pan then I'm going to either use a 2 inlet muffler or two glass pack. Undecided on that. But as said the ramhorns are a great way to go for cheap and space saving and from what Ive read they dont flow too bad either. $160 for a new set from advance. Look up a set for say a 63 (?) 327 corvette. Mine came from a guy who bought them in the early 90s from Gm, so if you look hard you can find them used as well.

Just an update.

I decided to use the rams horn manifolds, 2 1/2 inch pipes from them into a 3 inch (cross over is behind the engine but in front of the transmission/transfer case skid plate), using a 3 inch in/out Flow Master 50 series muffler with a 3 inch tailpipe coming out the back.

I think the sound is great.
