Been thinking about an axle swap and gears since I broke my first shaft in the front and the rear d35 prob won't last much longer , was looking for input on what u guys think would work the best currently I have a 89 with stock d35 and d30 with an Aussie locker. I have a 4.0 and ax15 swapped too. I know all about the 8.8 swap but what other good front and rear axles would work well for my rig. I wheel pretty hard and run about 6 in of lift with 36x12.50 super swampers on pretty heavy beadlocks. I have 3.73 gears I believe and they work ok but prob need higher ones.
Thanks!

I like and I'm running the D44 from a 81-91 wagoneer in the front and a D44 from an Isuzu Rodeo in the rear....it comes with disc brakes. Both can be pulled from junkyards for penny's on the dollar.
Take a look at my jeeps profile...
Thanx...hope this helps.

Ya I'll take a look, I'm looking mainly for axles that I could run up to 40s on
10-4...there was no mention of 40's in your question...
Your gonna want a D60 from the front of a 78/79 Ford F250 and Ford 9" for the rsar
And yes...your gonna want lower gears for sure....513s are as low as a high pinion D60 will go though.
Hope this helps.

Yep, like was said above. You want 1 ton running gear. I would put a Dana 60 in the front, and either a Dana 70 or 80 in the rear if you want to turn 40's.

Just so you know, the Ford 8.8 and the Ford 9" are both good rears but neither will handle 40's or the torque required to turn them.

I have the 8.8 in <--- that YJ and I have a 9" in my stock car. But neither will handle the bigger tires. I think the max. rating on either is 37's. I have seen 40's on a 9" before, but it was a mall crawler.

Naw, 5.38's (either standard thickness or thick) are easily available for the HPD60. The thick 5.38's are made so that you can use them with the non 4.56 & up carrier.

Publication Name:

My junk has a Ford ('88 - '91.5) F350 kingpin HPD60 in front and a full floater 14 bolt from a Chevy 3500 truck out back.

These axles are BIG compared to stock YJ axles. Their combined weight alone without tires/wheels would be 1,100+ lbs. The HPD60 weights ~560-580 lbs and a FF 14B will be ~550 lbs with drums. You can convert the rear 14B to discs which will save ~100 lbs, which is what I did to mine.

Ya disc brakes were on the list too since I occasionally drive on the roads to go wheeling diffrent places, but that's really nice, I was hoping to keep my 4.0. Would that be possible? I'm sure the ax15 will have to go?

Yep, a good running 4.0L and AX-15 is fine (which is what I have). For transfer case gearing, I swapped to an twin stick Atlas-II with 5.0 gear reduction, and currently run 4.56 gears in the axles with plans to go to 5.38's.

Current crawl ratio is 87.32:1.

If I still ran a stock NP231, the ratio would be 47.33:1, which would suck.

Once the 5.38's go in, I'll be at 103.03:1, which is better for the type wheeling I often like to do.

Hey 10-4 on the 538s...I got my info about the 513s in the HP D60 from a conversation with Art.
Its been a while...are we gonna see the Yj out on the trail soon?
