I went out and bought a new steeing box a while back to attempt the steering box swap. While at the auto parts store I also borrowed their largest pitman arm puller. It didnt fit it was too small. I held a tape measure up to the part Im supposed to put the puller around and it looks like a puller with about a 1-3/4" opening is needed. So I went to 10+ auto parts stores, sears, northern tool, harbor freight... EVERYWHERE and no one had a puller close to that size.
I'ver read several threads on her about the job and this problem is never mentioned. Everyone but me just watlzes into their local auto parts store and picks up the correct puller.
The opening on the puller goes around that indented ring... RIGHT?!
What size is needed? Am I doing something wrong? WHERE THE HELL DO YOU FIND THIS TOOL?!

The puller's threaded rod only rests against the steering box's sector shaft that the Pitman arm fits around. The tip of the puller's threaded rod doesn't cover the entire sector shaft, it only pushes against it in the center. Hit the top of where the Pitman arm is on the sector shaft with some Liquid Wrench, Kroil, PB-Blaster, or Break-Free penetrant an hour or two before you try to remove the Pitman arm so it has a chance to soak in between... the Pitman arm is on there TIGHT and you need to help it all you can. No, don't bother trying WD-40. :)

Thanks JB, but that's not what I'm asking. I can't find a puller that has the prongs far enough apart to fit around that indent they need to go into. It's an OEM steering box from a 2000 TJ 4.0.
Is it a special size puller that they do not allow people in Minnesota to have?
The opening papers to need to ba about 1-3/4". Is that correct?

I dunno what the issue is, I've used borrowed/rented pullers a couple times to pull Pitman arms. The normal size pullers I've seen were always the right size.

Find the biggest puller that is closest to the size without going over. Take it to a grinder and make it bigger.

I had this problem too and finally realized that the rubber dust jacket had slid down from out of the housing over the splines. Check for that, and if that's the case just push it back up into the housing and you're good to go.

Also, If you do what I did and drive around six months with the box leaking before fixing it, the pitman arm will be well lubricated and almost drop off on its own !! :)
