Hi guys. I'm sure this has been asked before, but after about 3 hours of browsing and reading threads, I didn't find it, so I'll ask a noobe question.

I've never owned a Jeep, but I'm thinking about getting one. I've always liked the old CJ7 and I like the looks of the TJ. Sorry if I offend the YJ owners, but the dash and square headlights have always been a turn off to me.

I have 3 kids so a Jeep will just handle us seat wise. I'm looking to do mild off-roading at first, camping, etc. Depending on how things go, more serious off-roading could be in the future, but I THINK stock or close to it would be good enough to start. I'd like to tow a small trailer like the M100 to handle water (lots of it, I live in S. Nevada), tent, sleeping bags, etc. I figure a trailer is the only way to carry gear for 4 people. A friend had recommended the Suzuki Samurai as a good, simple, cheap offroad vehicle, but it really can't tow a trailer.

I've been researching prices, equipment, drawbacks, etc. The CJs seem to be more mechanically simple than the TJ and I actually like the old metal dash. But I understand they ride a lot rougher than the coil springs of the TJ. Most amazing to me is that going prices on a CJ7 are almost the same as a TJ 10 years younger.

Recognizing that this forum has members who own and love their jeeps from all generations, is there any general advice you can give regarding the pros and cons of each generation? Price range is under $10k.

get a TJ. I am n the same boat you are in. Well, minus the kids. I want a jeep to do all the same stuff. but i like the interiors of the tjs are much better i think. but if you like the yj's you can get plenty of them for under 10.

That's Okay. Not everyone understands. Just buy the Suzuki.

Come on guys, he suggested it, but I'm asking about jeeps, not Samurai's. I keep telling him. Keep it out in the rain and well watered. Maybe it will grow into a Jeep.

Okay. What are you looking to spend? I always recommend going with the I-6 as opposed to the 4 cyl. Nothing wrong with the 4, but the 6 will give you a little more kick. Be careful when looking at an older CJ. They have usually been driven into the ground. Anything you buy, I'd have it ckecked over really well by a mechanic.

If your looking for a TJ, there's nothing wrong with going that route either. They are every bit as capable as an older CJ. In fact, the TJs are more capable than the CJ7s. Yes, I went there. With the improved suspension and clearance, they are good to run, right out of the box.

Speaking of good to run right of the box, too bad you've closed your mind to the YJ. I have one myself, and it is definetly all Jeep. Why do you let the headlights fool you? Also, I think the dash layout is the best of the three. It's tough looking and you can easily see all your gauges.

In my opinion, the YJ has a better look than the TJ. I love the TJ, too, but The sloping hood, short grill, and running lights in the fenders have always thrown me off a bit.

Start looking at Jeeps pretty hard and drive them. Don'tclose your mind to the YJ. That's a rookie mistake. There was a lot of people that did a lot of whining when the YJ came out. Those dys are gone now. The ones that did the complaining are gray haired now probably drive a Mazda.

Dorsai, just poking a little fun.

Everyone has their favorites, but no matter what year....it's a Jeep. My CJ is a rougher ride than the TJ, but I don't mind...love them both. However I use them for different things.

You mentioned mild off-road use, will it be your daily driver, too? Someone else was concerned about kids being able to access the back seat. Get out there and touch 'em, drive 'em and see what work best for you. Find out what's it's all about: "It's a Jeep thing........."

Like amerijeep said GET THE I-6!!! I got the 4 angry mice b/c of the price and now I am looking for a 6cyl to swap with. Don't give up. stick to your guns and get what you want. i looked for 2 years before I FINALLY got mine. but I am happy. I have a 03 TJ and my lil brother has a 94 YJ I like both of them. Drive them. see which one you like.

With needing to carry 4 passengers the only one that I would tell you to stay away from is the CJ-5. It is just way to short of a wheelbase to comortably carry 4 people and tow a small trailer.

With that being said the TJ is going to provide you with the best ride both on and off road. I don't think even Amerijepp will dispute that fact. :D But the YJ and CJ are definitely very capable vehicles and the leaf spring suspension makes them much easier to work on. The CJ's and earlier YJ's were carburated, so that could be a deterent to some. Fuel injection is a good thing to have if you are going to be in some off camber spots on a trail.

For your 10k budget however I would say that you can get upwards of a 2000 TJ with lower miles than you might find on a YJ or CJ. Like the others I say definitely go with a 6 cylinder however and really there is no bad jeep. So buy the one that catches your eye.

They YJ was a big mechanical improvement over the CJ7. They have wider and flatter leaf springs that make for a better ride and a much stronger frame. But for 10 grand you should be able to get yourself into a nice TJ with even more technical upgrades. And with the kids out in the desert the AC and peace of mind in having a newer more reliable vehicle is a good thing.

Well I cannot compare the CJ's and th YJ's but this is my second TJ, and I love it. I have two small children 6 and 3 and they do just fine, in fact as my daughter puts it, it is her jungle gym. For 10k you should find a nice 97-99 you just have to look and if you are concerned about lifting a cheap bb is the way to go. 200-250$$ and some 32's change the look and capabilities of said jeep. You will not be disappointed in any of the three, just remember to Wave. I have towed a small trailer 12ft I think with my diesel mower on it and it did just fine; also have pulled a 3 person waverunner with a blower on it, damn that was fun, and it did just fine also. And yes get the six cyl. you will be happy.
