2018 JK 2 door, 3.5" Synergy lift, Teraflex Dana 44, 37" tires
There seem to be several PSC kits for varying prices. I'd appreciate any advice you guys can give me.

You want the best one? Or just opinions on hydro assist vs the big bore box?

Also, you ever going bigger than 37s? And do you have beadlocks?

I’d go with one with a ram. The PSC big bore seems pointless to me because it doesn’t take any force off the steering gear or drag link. It just beefs up the sector shaft. I would get a kit that upgrades the steering pump and also has a cooler. A kit with all these features will be more complicated to install and a bit more expensive, but will spread some of the force to the tie rod. Anyway, it’s what I’ve been running for a few years (PSC) and it’s worked well for me.

I’ve had a few friends that went the big bore box and experienced premature failures. Maybe they were early models, before the bugs were worked out.

Go with a RAM assist not just the big bore box by itself in order to transfer the workload off the box. If you go PSC do the entire system to be assured that it's going to function properly.
Personally I run Redneck Ram and have zero issues with it. A couple of my friends also run the RR setup. I've also heard a lot of people that have problems with RR, I guess I've been lucky. I prefer the straight forward simplicity of the RR system - stock box tapped for hydro, a RAM and hoses. No cooler, no new pump, no res.

Do you have front lockers? That is the main reason to go PSC hydroasssist - so you can turn a locked front axle. If you dont have front lockers and just realize that the stock steering box is weak, the Big Bore box replacement may be all you need.

I do not recommend running locked 37s with just the Big Box (aka without the full hydraulic assist) - you will be much better off adding the full hydroassist with it, but yes, it will cost more.

If you have front lockers and do a lot of technical wheeling, I would do the one with the Big Bore box replacement and full hydroassist.

If you dont have front lockers and dont offroad anything really technical, you may be able to get by with just the Big Bore box.

yep, I have front lockers, but will probably never go bigger than 37". Maybe bead lockers one of these days. I've already experienced situations where I couldn't steer without rolling the Jeep forward. I need bigger brakes too, but I think the steering is going to come first.

I agree that hydro assist is what you need. You don't need a bigger steering box regardless of what kind of wheeling you're doing if you have hydro, the only exception might be if you're planning on running 44"+ tires. You can always install a bigger ram if you need more turning force. The PSC pump is good as it produces around 1850 psi and has much better flow volume.

When I did mine, I bought it as parts from PSC. I did this because I already knew I didn't want to use their hoses. At the time it ended up being slightly cheaper this way. I also run it with -8 AN as opposed to -6 AN hose. The pressure side is Parker and Aeroquip, return side is Russell Performance. I stayed away from push-lock hoses. I would also be wary of PTFE pressure hose in this application. It's not that it's not good, but it is very sensitive to bend radius and it's hard to route in the JK engine bay where you don't go below it's minimum bend radius.

I would also run a cooler. Some don't, but it will shorten the life of the oil and make it more likely to overheat when stressed. Plus, installing the cooler isn't hard.

Lastly, work hard to plan out how you're going to install the ram. Try to get it as parallel as possible to the tie rod. Angle between the two can cause the tie rod to swing up and down when changing steering direction. And make sure your mounting locations can handle the force.

I run just the PSC XD big bore box, the PSC PS pump, reservoir and cooler.

I also run beadlocks with 37's and have a front locker. I bought all my stuff lightly used so that's why I'm set up this way. Adding the ram is the most desirable configuration but just the XD box and PS pump does work for me. I wheel fairly aggressively in mixed terrain/rock. It's not the ultimate steering setup but it's so much more superior than stock.

Not knowing your wheeling style, you can always buy the PS pump, XD big bore box (get the ported one, trust me on that), reservoir and PS cooler and try it out first. Worst case is that it doesn't completely meet your expectations, add the ram.

I've got 37s and am locked in the front, usually air the beadlocks down to 7psi.

Personally the big bore box (with their pump and cooler) does it for me. I've had it everywhere from Arizona to Missouri to Indiana since I installed it this year. I think there's been one occasion where I was wedged against a rock and couldn't turn, but a million times better than before. Not sure if a ram would've helped there either, maybe end up just turning the whole jeep.

I was between this setup and the redneck ram, and wanted the extra confidence of the bigger sector shaft.

Anyway just my two cents. I'm sure you'd be even more confident with the whole psc setup including the ram, but I haven't come up short yet.

It looks like welding is involved with the kit for the Teraflex axle housing. I'm starting to think I should just go with the big bore box, pump and cooler and see how it works out before adding the ram.

What part do beadlocks play? Does the lower psi create more resistance?

:whistling: My unlimited is my DD and our preferred heep to take on trips. It NEEDS the hydro steering off road, but I made sure it had BIG BRAKES first because it gets driven on road much more than it gets driven off road. Are you sure you want to stick with that order of things??? UNLESS, your heep isn't your DD. Then you're ok!!

I went with the 1.5 inch ram. I'm running 39s. The smaller ram will work fine with 40s and require less fluid to move, which means it will work better with your stock components. My Jeep drives like stock on the road and works great in the rocks. I'm running a stock pump and reservoir without any cooler. Larger rams will require more fluid flow which stock components will not handle properly. Call and speak with the people at West Texas Off Road if you have questions.

No, it's not a DD. It gets driven on the road to get to the wheeling destination.
