Ok, thinking about getting a winch for my 98 TJ. I don't need anything real heavy, just like to have something for those occasional get myself (or someone else!) out of a "situation!" Thinking about fairly "inexpensive" Smittybuilt or maybe a Quadratec unit....advice/recommendations? Oh yeah, cost is a factor so I can't go too much...maybe up to $450?

If budget is a big concern, Smittybilt is just fine in the value brand winches. I'm surprised how many people are running them and I've yet to see any problems with them. One thing with then though is they are full of the nastiest, thickest grease you will ever see. They benefit greatly from tearing down the gear set, cleaning all that nasty stuff out, and replacing it with a high quality grease.

Why buy a winch?
You just need to travel with someone that has already already invested in the time, money and education to safety use a winch and it's necessities.

We have the Quadratec 9500 with synthetic line. My sister in-law has the Smittybuilt. I helped my brother install the Smittybuilt. I was a little disappointed in it compared to the Quadratec winch.
But I think either of those Chinese made winches would be about as good. Neither is as good as a high end winch, but both are often good enough.
I like the support for the Quadratec Winch, I can easily buy replacement parts for it. I assume the same is true for the Smittybuilt winch. I doubt it is true for some of the cheaper options.
If you do get a winch, I suggest synthetic line. And make sure you have the additional hardware and knowledge on how to use it.

Hey there!

If you have a budget up to $450 I highly recommend our Quadratec Stealth 10K winch.

I have this winch with the synthetic line on my JK and it is amazing! With this winch above I have listed the steel cable down the road if you would like to change to a synthetic line you can!

Other winches I would recommend are:

The synthetic line version:

I run this one on my TJ:
