Parked in the driveway, start the Jeep up to warm while salting the driveway and I hear a pop as I walk by the Jeep from the garage with another bucket. Look around, nobody in sight then I notice the spiderweb that just showed up right in the Jeep grill on the windshield.
No trees over the Jeep and it wasn't moving. Can the change in temp from the defrost cause this.
I know it wasn't cracked when I parked, or when I started it.

I small divot caused by debris hitting the windshield can stay miniscule until a cold windshield gets a heat blast. Then the weakness causes this.

Yes, happens to me. Sitting in it with defrost on hi an POP. Small crack, all the way across windshield within 2 days. There is no chips anywhere. Chrysler has replaced some I have read.

This happens more often then you might think.
The sudden tempature change can cause the glass to crack. I had this happen to me a few times in Germany with other vehicles.

The heater in these jeeps is so hot I can see how this happens. I am careful to just defrost enough so I can see but I worry that even with being careful its gonna blow. We have had -12to -25 degree actual temps here with more to come so this will be the ultimate test. If I can make it thru the winter with my original windshield, I am sure I will break it wheeling.

that's a good heads up. I've been warming mine up for 15-20 minutes with the defrost on full. I should change it to be more indirect. This morning it was -19 and no warm-up in sight.

No glass coverage, windshield is only 12 month coverage. Well at least I meet my deductible for the year

Yes defrost on a cold windshield can do this. Hard to remember but if it's cold outside let the jeep warm inside first with heat going through vents before turning on windshield. I got a pop several days ago when it was about 8 degrees outside and I turned the air to defrost too soon. No cracks luckily with the pop but I quickly realized what was happening and turned the air to cabin until everything had properly warmed up.

I just had my windshield replaced yesterday because it cracked during the ice storm here in Dallas last month. Had the defroster on and when I turned it off, that's when I heard the "pop". I should have known better.

Yep..had it happen to me. I guess living in California where it doesn't get that cold made me learn a valuable lesson in how hot effects cold windshields in the snow. :-S I have a nice crack right where the defroster hits the windshield. Heed the warnings of not blowing the defroster at full heat and air...it may save you a cracked windshield. ;-)

I have never had this problem with any vehicle I have owned. :hide: living through the ice storms in Dallas to the freezing cold of Utah Mountains.

I park outside (not in garage) - I warm up my car with the defroster on high volume and high heat. As the car warms up - the air to the windshield also warms up albeit slowly when it is freezing cold. I don't throw the defroster on AFTER the engine has warmed up. Then when I am ready to leave I put the air on the defrost/feet mode and away I go. I keep the defrost going if it is really freezing outside as I may have to use my windshield wipers and I don't need the fluid freezing on my windshield nor rain if applicable. I have never dealt with frozen windshield wipers, fluid, etc.

We had an ice storm hit yesterday so I turned on the defrost in my 2013 JKU and my windshield cracked. There were no chips or cracks in the windshield before. It sucks that the new windshield cracked just from the heater.

I have two or three small stone chips in my windshield and have been waiting for the "apparently" inevitable pop while defrosting the glass (or another stone). So far, through three winters, no pop.
With full glass coverage, I wouldn't mind a new windshield but if it won't break, I'm not going to chance replacing it with a new one that might. Better to stay with a known property than one untried.

YMMV, and invariably will...

Through the years I have been with two different insurance carriers that would pay 100% of the cost to repair the small chips. They never raised my deductible when I have used it. According to the guy from Satellite, who repaired my last one, they can fix chips or cracks as long as the crack is smaller than a dollar bill. The only catch is they won't do the repair if it is in your line of sight. There is a slight distortion in the repair area, but it isn't too noticeable. I had a repair a little over a year ago, and was real happy with the results.
