It's not that harsh to mount and remount but its never free. By the time you do it you will easily spend over $100 a year.

Alloy vs steel is a hard debate. Steel rusts but alloy corrodes. Steel is stronger but heavier. Steel can be pounded into place if you slide sideways into a curb.

I think your cheapest bet would be to buy winter tires and mount them on your old steelies. A dedicated winter tire is hands down better than a duratrac in the snow and you may break even with just the cost of removing and remounting the duratracs, yet it'll be easier and you can change from duratracs to snow tires In your driveway just by changing out rims
