Hey guys. New to the forum and YJ's, but not to off-roading. I've been riding and wheeling for over 40 years, but this is my first YJ so I've came to seek knowledge from the gurus.

I just bought a '93 YJ with a 4.0 and AX-15, rolling on 39.5 Swampers with a spring over axle conversion and D60'S with 5.13 gears and lockers. It's in really good shape and hasn't been wheeled to death, but it has a couple of relatively minor issues I'm trying to work out pretty soon.

The guy I bought it from hadn't used it much and it sat in the weather (outdoors) for about a year with not top. That's probably what caused the wiper control arm (on the column) to seize up, but I managed to free it up and get the wipers to come on occasionally. Most of the time they work, but sometimes they won't AND/or will randomly stop. I assume that I need a new switch in the column? How big of a PITA is that? I'm a decent mechanic on "most" things, but haven't ever messed with a steering column before and haven't been able to find a YouTube video that covers it. It looks like an old GM column.

Also, the wipers only cycle about 90* to 100*....roughly 10:00 to 2:00. The motor seems to work fine, other than the aforementioned intermittent issue that I assume is probably the switch. Does that sound like an issue with the linkage....surely that's not normal???

The other problem is that the washer fluid reservoir and pump are missing, and I'm reading conflicting info' about compatible years. Some say that a '90 thru '95 will work, others say that a '92-'93 are unique. If the 92/93 are indeed unique, I'm having trouble finding one that isn't used and looks too crappy to be worth buying. Can anyone shed any light on that?

If your wipers come and go it's more often than not a wiring connection issue, There is the harness that runs down the column that plugs into a flat module for you intermittent wipers, then plugs back into the harness that goes to the wipers and reservoir pump. I would clean up those connections with a little emery cloth and spray electrical cleaner, and a dab of dielectric grease on the surfaces for a start.

As far as 10 and 2 on the wipers, welcome to the YJ world.

Fluid reservoir can go one or two pump depending on whether you had a stock hardtop with wipers which would require the dual pump model reservoir.


At the bottom of my signature there are FSM's in the Dropbox link you can check out to help you with the wiring etc. You will have to decide what year your working withas once you start getting into modified Jeeps there is no telling what you have until you get into it.

Switch is about $20 from Quadratrec and motor around $50. Replaced my few months ago. Hardest part is getting roll bars bolted back in place , at least for me it was.

I have a cheat for that.
No need to remove the visor screws to get at the spreader bar bolts.

Simply unzip the roll bar padding.
From the rear of the roll bar is a T-50 on each side, they are five or six inches long into the rear of the spreader bar.
Remove them and the windshield will fold with the spreader bars and visors attached.

The advantage is the bolts are long enough to 'dial' the windshield back into it's original position without fighting it.

Mine is a 1990 sport roll bar configuration not a family style roll bar. It has bolts that you spoke of. A ratchet strap did the trick for me. But thank you for your advice.

Guys, thanks for the info'.

It appears that the connection at the intermittent module was the problem with the wipers coming and going. Cleaning the connectors seems to have resolved that portion of the problem.

The problem that I still have is the switch still doesn't work properly. It will cut the wipers on and off, but the intermittent feature and the pump part of the switch still won't work. Judging from how difficult it is to twist the arm, I'm guessing the switch is still an issue. Not worried about the intermittent part, but I would like to get the pump working (once I get it installed because it and the reservoir are both missing).

Any tips on replacing the switch? Do I have to remove the steering wheel to access that part of the column? I looked at it but how to disassemble it isn't jumping out at me.

Then click on the service manual that fits your year Jeep.

Our YJs use General Motors steering columns. If you went to UTUBE and searched "rebuild GM steering column" or something similar, I'll bet there'll be a ton of information.
