Can anyone tell me how to wire my aftermarket KC daylighters so that they will not turn on when my jeep is off? The way they are wired using KC's supplied diagram will allow them to be turned on an time by anyone. Since I have a soft top I don't want my kids or anyone accidentally (or not) turning them on and killing the battery. I reached out to KC but their tech could not answer this. I'm guessing its as simple as connecting the white wire to a different lead but wasn't sure which one.

use a switched circuit in the fuse panel as your power source. that way it will only be energized when the ignition is in the on position.

if you don't have a free circuit in the fuse panel you can use a tap fuse to add a circuit to an existing switched circuit

I am not sure how much current the trigger wire (assuming the switch operates relays and assuming that's the white wire) but you should be able to piggy back a fused hot switched lead from the fuse panel behind the glove box.

There are several to chose from. No. 3 should power the sub-woofer system if present, No. 14 the Radio could be one. I piggy backed the lead for my dash cam off of one, (I think 14) and it works great.

The fuses that come with it are pathetic but the device itself is great. The blades of the enclosed fuses have a step which keeps them from properly seating. Check the circuit with a fuse in the upper slot and see if it is only hot when the key is on or in the accessory position.

You'll want to be careful that you're not powering the lights themselves from piggie backing on an existing switched circuit. The will almost certainly draw too much power.

As rgreen65 mentioned, if there's a power relay between the lights and the battery, you should be able to energies that from any of the switched power sources mentioned previously, but it is up to you to understand the current draw of such a relay.

It would be helpful if you could post/describe your currently installed wiring.

Do you have any ability to cut, splice, and crimp or solder? If not, then you must use the piggy back fuse device linked above. If so, then yes you can tap some switched power source in the cab somewhere, but it's still not as simple as a piggy back.

Where did you mount the switch? If in the center console, the run to the fuse box is quite short.

So, it's there in your diagram. The "or other Power Source" tag. The main power for the lights is the "yellow" line connected directly to your battery. The "white" line to the switch only energizes the relay, ( thus the 3A fuse )

Connect the "white" wire to a switch power source. Follow rgreen65 directions and you should be good to go.

Mine is powered using a relay, and I feed the relay coil off the wire out of the headlight switch that runs the parking lights. So it can still run without the ignition on, but you at least have to turn the parking lights or headlights on first.

I wired it exactly how the diagram from KC which you linked to stated. I connected the white wire to the battery (I wanted to check with you all first to see if I could get an answer on a switched lead since this is not my forté).

Don't connect that white wire directly to the battery. You want to connect it to a switched power source that's only supplying 12V when your key is switched to on. You can connect to the spare power wire that's labeled switched aux power behind the glove box, it should be taped to the wire loom going to the fuse box.

No luck- purchased the same piggy back lead but all fused leads don't seem to be switched??? even the subwoofer/radio/any others i tried all turned the daylighters on with no key. Interestingly enough- I should say that the headlights, parking lights will turn on as well with no key in the ignition. Wonder if a previous owner wired it up this way.

What does your fuse box labels look like?

Might be one that says "Aux power (switched)" or "Cigar lighter". Tap into one of those.

I think most cars let you turn on the headlights without the key in....

can you turn your radio on with the ignition off? that will tell you if its a switched circuit or not. I have done this exact mod using a tap circuit to the radio circuit and it turns the accessory off with the ignition

Tangerined- at work now so I can't remember off the top of my head but I tried piggybacking to many of the fuses both in the glove box and under the hood which I thought would be switched. I'll check for the labeled switched aux power wire behind glove box when I can.


Jed, Yes and no- when I turn the ignition to off the radio will turn off, but if I press the little kidney bean shaped key release button behind the ignition (which incidentally does not even need to be used to remove the key) I can turn the key back and then turn the radio on.


Not sure if it matters but its a 6 speed manual transmission.

If you are trying to use the fuse tap to tap into a fuse in the PDC (fuse/relay box in front of the battery) there are no switched power fuses there, only in the fuse block behind the glove box.

There are various circuits powering fuses in the fuse block. Constant power to fuses 1-3, key on (only) fuses 5-8, key on & acc fuses 13,14,17 & 18 and key on & start fuses 9-12. The others are for various circuits mostly for optional equipment which you may or may not have on your TJ. If you do not have a hardtop fuse 6 should be unused & a good place to tap into with a tap & 10a fuse.

If you want switched power from the PDC area there are no fuses there but some wires going to various relays that run under the PDC & not hard to lift it & splice into one of them. They are already fused, most if not all from fuse 12 in the fuse block (PDC Relays). That is sometimes convenient when wiring things like lighting relays that would normally be located under the hood, near the battery. I can advise on that if interested.




Since you have a 2005, there are no switched/unswitched wires behind the fuse block as some earlier years had.

I would love to tie into a switched wire under the hood if possible since the white wire is already in the same loom that the other wires, fuse and relay are on!

I figured you might want to splice in at the PDC.

Lift the PDC & find a pink/white wire going to either the ASD or fuel pump relay. I think it comes in to the FP relay where a 2nd wire is spliced in at the terminal which goes to the ASD relay & again a 2nd wire is spliced at that terminal which leaves the PDC going up to the PCM. Splice into any of those wires, whichever is most convenient or easiest to get to. Drop the PDC back in & you should be good to go. And the white wire is now protected by fuse 12 in the fuse block so no added fuse is needed.

I tapped the high beam side of my head lights so the they only come on when the head lights are on high. That way if I meet someone I can turn the KC's off with out fumbling for the dash switch.
