Where wiring winches is concerned, I'm no fan of connecting them through a solenoid which together with the on-off switch plus the SPOD, all that just adds unnecessary multiple points of failure.
Not to mention Warn's solenoid that comes in their kit is only rated continually to something like 175 amps and our winches can easily pull well over 400 amperes under a heavy load. I certainly wouldn't install that kit if I intended to use my winch a lot when offroad which puts heavier loads on our winches than casual street use does.
Personally, since I want a winch to be as bulletproof and as reliable as possible, I always connect them directly to the battery... as I'm sure the directions that came with your winch also say to do.
