I have a 1990 jeep wrangler YJ.
I had issues with not being able to put it in any forward gear when it was stopped. As long as it was moving , I could put it in any gear with ease.
After much research and advice from many sources I finally talked to someone who was suspicious of the pilot bearing. I replaced the pilot bearing (as well as the clutch assy and flywheel) and the problem was corrected. The pilot bearing was the culprit. This Jeep was in storage for many years and I suspect that is what caused the grease to harden in the pilot bearing which caused the transmission to contimue to try to rotate when the clutch was depressed.
Hopefully this info will benefit others who have similar problems.:)
