so pulled the transfer case the front yolk moves about 3/8 of an inch in either direction. the fluid that came out of the trans when i pulled it apart was light brown. thought i heard some sounds coming from the clutch area also so the trans comes out next.

its my daily driver, dont go in water, so dont know why thats like that.

could the play on the front yolk be transfering noise to the front of the trans or should i just pull it and see if the clutch is having issues?

anybody have any idea why all this happened?

No idea why the yoke (not yolk) is moving, I'd have to suspect the output shaft bearing is toast. The front yoke is connected to the front driveshaft which spins all the time even in 2wd, you might just be hearing that assembly making noise. At the least I'd change the gear lube inside the transmission, Redline MT-90 is a good choice though a synthetic 10W-30 motor oil is also an acceptable lube which would of course be available locally... assuming your transmission is a manual. If it's an automatic, use only ATF+4.
