I have an 04 unlimited with 250000 miles on it. It went into limp mode with the p0605 code. I put a new engine in it and was still in limp mode. I pulled the pcm and sent it in. The company said it had a software issue and fixed it. I put it back in and still in limp mode with the p0605 code. I pulled the tcm and sent it in. The same response of a software issue. I’m waiting on it to come back but my question is what would cause both of them to lose their programs?

A P0605 is a generic transmission code, did you generate that code by turning your ignition switch on-off-on so it displayed the code on your odometer display? If so go buy an inexpensive OBDII code reader and have it pull the more detailed transmission code(s).

My '04 42RLE seized up on me while on a wheeling weekend and I got nothing but an unhelpful generic transmission code from the Jeep's built-in diagnostics too. I was able to get a better code once I got home that lead me to the problem which was a bad relay pack that I was able to replace.

For the ‘04 TJ/LJ, P0605 relates to the TCM only.

The general description of the code is TCM ROM failure. The 42RLE specific troubleshooting steps are to inspect the TMC wiring, paying particular attention to ground wiring, then to replace the TCM.

The TCM grounds to the firewall where you’ll also find a ground harness that connects to the driver side of the head. You can also check the fuse and relay in the PDC. After that, you’ll need to reference the service manual and begin testing the wiring harness.

I just checked the '04 service manual and it looks like the TCM grounds at G105 on the passenger side of the engine. G105 is the bolt coming out of the block that the oil dip stick tube mounts to.

The TCM relay grounds to the center of the firewall at G100.

Transmission stuck in second gear. Now I have the p0700 code. I originally had the p0700 and p0605 before I sent the pcm to be repaired. The p0700 code went away and I had the p0605 only. I sent the tcm to be repaired and I’m back to the 0700. I just put the engine in a couple of months ago so it’s ok.

OK, wanted to be sure it was the trans. The P0700 is a basic, generic trans code. Usually that tells you there are other, more specific, trans codes but not all readers will see them. You can try the key on-off-on-off-on trick to see if it shows other codes in the odometer display but think it probably will not. If not you may need a scanner that reads trans codes to see what is there.
