Hi there, I have a 1990 YJ 2.5 liter and it generally runs well. But when I drive it uphill at higher speeds it stalls and doesn't seem to have power. Even more so at low revs.

Hoping that someone has an idea of where to look.

The first thing that comes to my mind is water in the fuel tank. Either that or some sort of crud or blockage to the fuel pickup. I'd try a can or two of dry gas but I think the real issue could be with the engine size.

The 2.5 is a low power engine. Fifth gear will be OK with stock tires on level ground at highway speeds. Once you put larger tires on, 5th gear is pretty much useless. My best suggestion is when you come to the that particular hill is to downshift to third gear and see what happens. Keep in mind that your Jeep is 30 years old and was built at a time when the life expectancy of a vehicle was a planned 10 years.

What size tires and what transmission does your Jeep have?

Good Luck, L.M.

I recently found the issue so I thought I'd write that here as it is quite interesting. It turns out that before I bought the car in 2003 someone added a second fuel pump. A year ago we replaced the fuel pump in the tank which improved it but not to perfection. Recently the YJ stopped completely and it had to be towed away. At the garage they told me they replaced the fuel pump but that seemed odd as it was replaced a year ago. They told me it was near the left rear wheel on the chassis. I first did not believe it but as the car drove so much better I investigated further and yes it was there, a second fuel pump. Now it is fine uphill. It still has it's limits as it is a 2.5L with larger wheels and a 4 inch lift.
