Good evening - I have a YJ 1988 Wrangler with the 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. First the engine seems to be difficult to start (needs to be cranked for several seconds). Second the engine runs very rough, even after a few minutes of warm up time. Third, idling is still rough and almost sounds like the engine is trying to run "backwards" (chugging). Fourth, when driving the jeep, when I let off the accelerator, the rough running comes back and the engine makes the same "chugging" again. Any conversation/recommendations will be appreciated.

When and why do you think your issues started? Was this building over time or sudden? Sometimes when washing the engine, plugs get wet and will make a rough idle.

There may be other issues or several issues related to your problem but I would start by cleaning your throttle body and Idle Air Control Valve.
Do not just buy a new IACV from a parts store as I have found from experience that they are garbage. If you end up having to buy one, go oem. But start with a good cleaning.

Pictures of your engine are always helpful because someone may spot something that you may not notice.

Howdy JPB68,
In addition to what JonStevens suggests, I suggest a tune up. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor and then run a Seafoam treatment through your gas tank. Seafoam should be available at your local auto parts store or maybe Walmart. One oz. of Seafoam per gallon of gas. If you don't find Seafoam easily, then try a couple bottles of fuel injector cleaner in the tank.

Let us know if any of this helps.

Good Luck, L.M.

What Luckymac said. When I bought my '93 with 2.5L and 5 speed, it had been sitting idle for close to a year. Started right up but idled rough, surged while driving, and had no power in 5th gear. Did what Luckymac suggested above, plus a new inline fuel filter, and it has been running perfectly.
