I have an '05 Jeep Rubicon in great condition with 139,500 miles. Been told I need to replace the transmission but it'll last probably 10,000 more miles before replacement. Is it worth it? Cost is $3,600.

Depends on the condition of your TJ. Plus how long that you plan on keeping it. Used Wranglers are currently selling for a pretty high price.

Maybe use it as an opportunity to upgrade the transmission. If you like the TJ, the rest of the Jeep is in good condition and you intend to keep it for a while, then I would suggest keeping it and doing a replacement. As @Old Dogger stated, used Jeep prices are pretty stupid and unless you bought a new Jeep (current new car prices are a bit insane) you would be gambling the used Jeep didnt have issues that you dont know about plus how well and what mods were done. You might consider it from the perspective of what you would get if you sold/traded it now before the tranny goes out. What you could get if you tried to sell it after the tranny goes out. What you could get if you replaced the transmission and sold it. As compared to what the cost to replace it when buying new or used. I suspect the cost will be much cheaper just replacing the transmission, especially since you plan on keeping it a few more years.

Codyite - that is a good looking Jeep, but not sure about the Rubicon part. The sill guard is different than any other Rubicon photo (legitimate Rubicons) that I have seen. Most are a diamond plate design with screws and a seal across the top to keep moisture from getting behind it.

Here's a photo of mine:

And of course no "Rubicon" decal on the hood. While previous owner could have removed it, fakes with "Rubicon" on the hood of non-Rubicons are more common that real ones without the decal.

You can tell it's a Rubicon if it has the switch for locking front and rear diffs on the center dash. You can also run the build sheet here: Ignore the word RAM, it works for any CDJR vehicle back to early 90's.

If you plan on keeping the Jeep for a few more years, and it's a standard shift I'd contact Advance Adapters and tell them you want to swap out your old 6 speed for an AX-15 5 speed. They have the expertise to help you with the swap. A BRAND NEW AX-15 is $1742.00 and is a better transmission than your old stock NV-4500 standard trans. That way you can enjoy the next few years of driving your Jeep without worrying about the trans crapping out and having to cheap sell it with a broken transmission. AA might even give you back some dough for the old trans as a core to rebuild.

What I find curious is the shop telling you that you need a new (probably they mean rebuilt) transmission but the current one will last another 10K miles. Exactly what's wrong with your current transmission? Is it auto or stick?

Good Luck, L.M.

I do have the switch I think you are talking about. It says axle lock and I remember when I bought it my son said not to touch it. LOL!
Nice looking Ride..(y)

Not sure if this will continue on the same thread but I sure hope so. I got the trans rebuilt at the end of May basically 5 months ago. Took it back three times because it still slips. They finally sent it to their buddies who are my basic auto repair guys to have the on board computer rebuilt as well as the fan clutch replaced at no charge to me. Guess what? Still slips. Do I hire an attorney? I don't know what to do at this point. Even if I wanted to sell it at this point, I wouldn't because that would be honest about it's condition. BTW it's an automatic, someone asked before.

Talk to Mark at @wranglerfix. Wranglerfix is a supporting vendor of this forum and gets great reviews. They started fixing '95-'96 automatic Wrangler PCMs when Jeep no longer serviced the units.
You state yours was repaired by a different shop. Talk to mark and tell him what your issue is and what has happened so far. He should be able to tell you if he can help.

Good Luck, L.M.
