Okay, so I am getting a bumper and I want to get D-rings as well. I am looking at 3/4 or 7/8? Whats the big difference? Will the 3/4 dangle more and make noises when I hit a bump? I really dont know the difference between the two so I just wanted to see what everyone knows...tried searching for a D-ring thread but no luck :/

Are you going for looks or function? If you're worried about clanking noises, I'd say you want to look tough in the mall parking lot.

If you need something to count on during recovery operations, buy high quality non-Chinese shackles and keep them inside your Jeep along with the rest of your recovery equipment.

For the same quality shackle, the bigger diameter will have the bigger load capacity. Before you decide on the size, read how the surface your stuck on/in affects the resistance calculation for recovery operations. All of your recovery equipment needs to be rated far above the your gross vehicle weight.

If you're under thirty years of age and used to reading texts and tweets, the following may be overwhelming:

Nice link! I just didnt know alot about the big difference between the two. I was going to go with the 7/8 because I figured it would hold up during towing/recovery when I really need it. I am not building a typical mall crawler.

I don't understand why folks leave them on the bumper. Simply because of the ease of a dishonest person easily being able to steal them.

I don't think there's a shackle-theft wave going across the country, but it's really easy to avoid the risk.

OK, Just to add more info... but a observation.. just the same. I have 1" holes in the bumper for the D-rings. I purchased Rugged Ridge 11235.03 Heavy-Duty Zinc D-Ring - 13500Lb capacity with a " 1" " pin. However after measuring the pin in the middle it is 1", however the diameter of the threads is 1 1/32". Thus it won't fit through the 1" hole in the bumper. Is this sloppy machining or.... what? I am thinking it is an issue with quality and/or poor engineering might be the fault. Comments, thoughts... Just please don't throw anything at me.

The one inch hole and/or shaft is the nominal diameter. A 1" hole drilled in a bumper mount gets powder coated afterwards and is now therefore slightly less than a 1" hole. A 1" shaft on a D-Shackle gets galvanized and/or powder coated and becomes slightly larger than a 1" shaft. The 1" hole in the bumper mount is for a 3/4" pin with plenty of clearance for dirt, debris, or deer guts.

A permanently mounted shackle looks like this. USA Bolt Pin Anchor Shackle - from Tulsa Chain.com, LLC You can get less expensive versions that are just as strong. Over tightening a screw pin shackle to use it as a permanent shackle is not a good thing.

Happy Trails,
