3.6 Pentastar swap compatibility/differences

In the past, I've had a couple of opportunities to pick up low mileage 3.6s from V8 swaps reasonably. I have a 2012 that I don't plan on ever giving up but realize someday the engine will so it got me thinking. I don't need to blow $$$ on a V8 swap but wouldn't mind tossing in another low or no mileage 3.6 for much less when the time comes.

So I'd really like an expert to chime in or someone that can point me in the direction of definitive info regarding any compatibility issues for later year assemblies into earlier harnesses, etc. I can imagine the 2016 (or is it 2017?) when they changed the VVT process may pose problems but does that mean up to 2015-ish would be a direct replacement? Or can the later be used along with an ECM swap? But then that may open a can with VIN, etc.

Thanks for any input.

If anyone else stumbles upon this looking for what vehicles use the same block, I may have found the answer.

According to this
https://www.moparfactoryparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-long-block-68264741aa?c=Zz1lbmdpbmUmcz1lbmdpbmUmbD04Jm49QXNzZW1ibGllcyBQYWdlJmE9amVlcCZvPXdyYW5nbGVyJnk9MjAxNyZ0PXVubGltaXRlZC1ydWJpY29uJmU9My02bC12Ni1nYXM=

The PN for the long block is 68264741AA
and the following vehicles all use the same long block

2014 Chrysler 200
2014-17 Chrysler 300
2014-16 Chrysler Town & Country
2014 Dodge Avenger
2014-19 Dodge Challenger
2014-17 Dodge Charger
2014-15 Dodge Durango
2014-19 Dodge Grand Caravan
2014-17 Dodge Journey
2014-15 Grand Cherokee
2014-18 JK Wrangler
2014-17 Ram 1500
2014-15 Ram C/V
2014-15 Promaster
Having had to swap my engine due to Prodigys lack of tuning knowlege, I wouldn't consider their answer as definitive that the PUG cant be tuned in...

Any non PUG (years listed above) engines are the same. You will need to swap timing cover components and belt driven accessories. I put a 3.6 from a 15 charger into my 17 JK and have been running it boosted (3rd party tuned) without any issues for about 6 months now.

So, as you may notice, I never did respond because if the answer was to chime in at WOL, I'd rather not ask it. Agreed on the above points.

At any rate, I've been busy with life and some time ago did pick up a 2014 3.6 with low miles to stuff in the corner of the garage for now. I'll eventually make a project of some sort out of that.

But coincidentally Gobi, I'm also running the prodigy turbo for a little over a year now. Agreed, 3rd party tuning is required. That said, I've been through 2 well respected tuners and have given up. I think few can beat it WOT and it has always run well in that regime, plus turbos are hands down the answer for FI choices at altitude (I'm at 8000ft and play higher). But part throttle accelerating has never been smooth and no one so far can iron it out. The pros have outweighed that con so far and maybe some day I'll get sick of dealing with that driveability issue but until then I'll drive it as-is with the back up in the corner.

Thanks Gobi. I'm at my wits end with throwing money at tuners only to have them fade out when they realize they can't figure it out. It's tempting to look up Demi but damn, when does the cash stop flowing. Overall though, I've learned that FCA doesn't address or contain low baro tables (high altitude) correctly and just compensate by leaning the shit out of it below a certain kpa so a tuner with that kind of knowledge to rewrite those tables is required. My last is local and understands that but just faded away (that's my hint to get lost) after multiple attempts to address that.

I have a MT so no tranny temps to share, sorry. But I will say that outside of that part throttle surging I have to tolerate, it excels everywhere else. Most of my driving is up and down passes, a ton of offroading and much of that pulling a 2000lb adventure trailer. Only starts to run hot on hot/high days going up hill if I let it hang out above 3000rpm for a while, but it would do that without the turbo anyway. No issues other than MIL codes that have to be deactivated so passing emissions is tricky.
