'89 YJ 4.2L Distributor Pickup Coil Question

After changing out the distributor pickup coil with a new one from NAPA the engine would not start. I returned it for a second one and the same result. I adjusted the timing by rotating the distributor counterclockwise (I'm guessing around 10 degrees of distributor rotation) to get the engine to start and run. The Nutter bypass was done a month or so before changing the pickup coil. The engine idles fine but driving it will have a hard jolt once in a while. This didn't happen with the old coil. I changed it out because the wire ends were exposed at the wire connector.

The service manual I have didn't say the timing would have to be adjusted to get the engine to run. Does this sound normal? I'm thinking I have to go back to the old pickup coil or did I miss something during the change?

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I appreciate any help.

Welcome to the forum @JDGerdes .

With the nutter bypass, the computer no longer has anything to do with your timing.

Most of us ditch the coil and OEM distributor in favor of an HEI conversion.
With the new pickup coil I know that your timing has to be reset from scratch and you need to get back to 8-10*.
You'll need to start with cyl #1 at TDC and go from there.

In the Jeep Manuals link below you'll find an 89 Factory Service Manual. In there you will find a ton of help, but remember your computer controls nothing so you have to go back to old school mechanical setup.
