98 TJ gauges not working. Running out of hair to pull!

98 Wrangler Sahara. 4.0 5 speed manual. Im trying to solve what seems to be the ever elusive mystery of the TJ cluster issue. My tachometer, speedometer, odometer (shows mileage but never changes), oil pressure, and water temp do not work. Tach will lift when motor is first started(sometimes) and fall to 0 a few seconds later and stay there. Air bag light is always on. As is my right blinker light (always stays lit). Check engine light comes on erratically, gives P0123 code (throttle position censor high input). One minute it’s there, the next it’s not. Fuel level, battery, and parking brake lights work fine.
I was given another used cluster. Removed the old and in with the new and had the exact same results. Odds of both having the same bad connections on the cluster themselves seem unlikely so I cleaned all connections coming from the Jeep and the clusters themselves and applied dielectric grease with no success. All fuses are good. Research led me to believe with the non working gauges and airbag light on, the clock spring was shot. Bought a new one, installed and still the same issues. My next try was to use needle nose pliers to slightly bend the male connectors in hopes of making a good connection. Once again, no success. I have now found a TSB service bulletin for the cluster connection on 98,99 TJ’s and XJ’s. I don’t know if the issue is in the connection from the harness end or the cluster end. And I really don’t won’t to go as far as chopping the entire connectors off of my harness and replacing them if that’s what the TSB calls for. I think the issue could also be the PCM. I just wanted to reach out for some advise before I attempted either or both and surely spent some money.
So does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem or if the P0123 code has something to do with all of it?

Tsb

Yeah I remember that issue. It occurred about 4 years after we bought our jeep in 2002. Or maybe it was 03', can't remember for sure.
I'm sure its written down somewhere. Yeah its a connector near the cluster, the dealership, fixed it and it hasn't happened since. ( knock on wood) .
Yeah nothing works on the instrument panel, no speedo, none of the gauges.

Have it done first and see if it corrects the issue.
Hope that helps,

CCD twisted pair bus is the common thread to all your issues

That's a common issue for early '97-99 TJs commonly caused by the two multi-pin electrical connectors at the rear of the cluster becoming intermittent. It happened to my TJ, no need to worry about the "CCD twisted pair bus".

Here's one writeup on fixing it which is like how I fixed mine nearly 20 years ago. TJ Jeep Problem with Instrument Guages.

Basically it involves using a small pair of needle nose pliers to very slightly bend the male pins in the connectors so they fit more tightly into the female half of the connectors so the electrical connection is no longer intermittent. Don't over-bend them, just the slightest possible barely perceptible bend is what you're after. Doing this completely fixed my '97 TJ's cluster which was constantly having that problem, it no longer had any problems afterward.

instrument cluster

When the instrument cluster freaks out and gauges go blank, 97tjguzzy, does the yellow low fuel warning light illuminate and the warning beep ?

I change my suggestion, I just saw your video. Your connectors looked real good. Do you feel all the pins on the connector on the back of the cluster slide into the permanently mounted connector with some resistance ? That would indicate they are touching one another and that is good.

Like mr. Bransford said, those connectors had a technical service bulletin for them, way back in the day. Sometimes I cannot believe my Jeep is twenty years old. I bought new set of Michelins' for it last month. Its good.

I hope you can find it. Check all of your grounds and clean or add new ones. That could help. I did and it really help quiet the radio so it couldn't hurt anything.
Good luck
Have a good one,

I found last night that the signal voltage purple/brown and white/black from the computer is inconsistent and incorrect at both the Plug for the gauge cluster plug and the obd2 port. It looks like the computer is not sending the correct signal. I have a computer from a friend that I plan to try tonight.

My gauges went crazy every so often also. The Air Bag light would come on, and then a few seconds later the Speedometer and Tach would drop out and then the check Engine light would come on. Some times all the gauges would go out.
I found the post on the Twisted pairs and looked at mine. Not only were they not twisted, they were routed thru and around all the other wires.
I cut both sides of both splices and made sure they were twisted and only running parallel with each other. I then re-soldered them and covered the splice with heat shrink tubing.
NO MORE PROBLEMS!
Here's a link that I used.
