Airdam. What does it do?

Stupid question, but... I removed the airdam while doing my lift because I needed to trim it for tire clearance anyway. But now I'm wondering what this flimsy piece of plastic actually does. Slightly better aerodynamics for increased mpg? It could never be mistaken for a skid. I can't see it surviving more than flying pebbles. A squirrel maybe, if I'm not going very fast. I'm thinking about leaving it off if trimming and remounting will be a waste of time. It just seems pointless for a non daily. Eventually there will be a new bumper with an actual skid up there.

It creates a low pressure zone while driving at freeway speeds. This helps your radiator to cool more effieciantly. But it has no effect on in city driving.

Secondly, it helps to eliminate hood flutter at highway speeds on windy days.

Tons of people on this site try all kinds of magic beans to get 1MPG more. I'd just leave it on. Its pretty durable, light, and who cares if you scratch it up?

Any vehicle acts like an airplane wing, well in the case of a Jeep a flying brick. As speeds increase down force is created helping to keep the nose of the vehicle from lifting. It can impact cooling and MPG. But Rubicon's don't have them but maybe that is the special edition s only.

I don't see how the air dam on a Jeep would ever create down force. Lift, maybe, but not down force. Even if it does create either lift or down force, I can't imagine it creating enough to effect handling in any way at the speeds a Jeep travels.

I took mine off when I replaced my front bumper. Haven't missed it at all.

I took my OEM air dam off, along with the plastic skirt, when I replaced my front bumper. Wasn't sure what the air dam was for, but since Hyland, the bumper manufacturer, also makes a steel air dam I put that on after putting on the new bumper. The steel air dam was relatively cheap and easy to put on, and I prefer steel over plastic.
