I've had one for a while now. It doesn't rattle. I can get two 1911s in it easily or one 1911 and a 24/7 long slide with a little wiggiling and still have room for a couple of mags. There is plenty of room for a Super Blackhawk also. I like the way the key doubles as a handle to pull the drawer out.

Mine only rattled off road. I guess it depends on your suspension as it doesn't rattle in my sons jeep...he does not have a lift. The other problem I had with the Bestop was keeping it closed when unlocked. No problem with the Tuffy. I have no horse in this race, I'm just telling you my experience.

Rich..Yes, a XD40will fit. My .357 revolver is large with a 6" barrel and fits both brand boxes. I noticed that the foam insert I cut for the Bestop had to be recut for the Tuffy so the insides are not identical.

I just bought one and put in my 2011 sahara with the heated seats. Just have to remove the wiring harness plate and place the wires to the side of the box. Works awesome and fits various guns, wallet etc. I love it!

Thanks for all the informative responses! I'm going to go with the Bestop and I can be confident it will work for me thanks to you guys!

Fits two 1911's with extra mags... or a S&W 686... Perfect!

I'm thinking about getting this unit so I can legally (in Calif.) and securely transport handguns in Jeep.

Bestop 42640-01 - Bestop® Locking Under Seat Storage Box in Textured Black for 07-11 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

Anybody know about it or a better alternative?
You don't need anything like that in order to be legal. The law says that when you are transporting a handgun in a motor vehicle the handgun has to be in a locked container other than the glove box. Lock it in a soft sided bag, a backpack, a locking Rubbermaid container and put that locked container anywhere you like, including inside your glove box. Of course on your jeep you can lock it in your center console.

When I go to the range I carry a few handguns and they are all in their own locking zippered bag using the little TSA locks.

Been wanting one of these - so thanks for the catalyst of this posting. We and looked at link and then installation guide.

Guide clearly showed mount atop front sit front feet support. Which is better mount other than under definitely looks cleaner. Took just a glance at pictos versus reading.

Thanks

Yea, I've been using soft-sided handgun cases with the zipper tab through the loop and paddocked for years. It's OK, but I'm thinking the under-seat lock box will be handier and more certainly legal, and secure. Of course, in Calif. you have to be on your way to or from the range, gun shop, hunting, fishing, or other legit reason to transport. I'm thinking these boxes are more discreet, less obviously containing a firearm.

"Got a warrant, officer?"

Thanks everyone for putting this information out here. I was looking at the differences between the bestop and tuffy boxes about a year ago, and could not make up my mind. So I have just been using a standard gun safe that cables under the seat. (I really don't like it so much when I have the doors and top off - to me someone could just cut the cable and take off with my gun. But I had it from my previous car, so I was making do.) So honestly I have been locking my gun in either the center consol or glove box. In Ohio when conceal carrying you just need to have it in a "locked" place or on you in the car.

I think I will probably go with the Bestop one, I would feel much safer than just using the glove box or consol. Plus this will allow both my husband and myself to lock our guns together when carrying. You guys did say the Bestop will fit 2 guns and mags right?

Bestop under seat storage box

I didn't install mine under the foot of the seat the way instructions said; if done that way, the box wouldn't sit tight against the floor, and would have to cut away carpeting to get a good fit. I shimmed the gap with washers on both sides to make a tight fit on top of both seat feet. There still was plenty of seat bolt length to fill the entire threaded hole, even with the washers. I put an extra layer of carpet underlayment under the back of the box to fill the bigger gap caused from shimming it up. To stop some rattling I tightened up the nut which holds the lock assembly in place. Unscrew the 4 screws and remove cover to get into the lock area. Also wrapped a couple layers of electrical tape around the lock cam, and put some foam weatherstripping around the drawer opening. No rattles and the drawer doesn't have that slight clicking from sliding in the locked position. No problem with wires hitting. I bent the wire slightly to form it around the back of the box. There's plenty of wire length to form it around the box.

Totally approve

I got mine last year while I was in NYC the guys at the dealership in Manhattan put it in and were all asking me where I got it. They thought it was foolproof as far as theft deterrent. I had some blue locktite and had then put it on the bolts just for a little extra security.
