Are LED Rocker Switches Too Bright? Are they dimmable?

I'm gearing up to install some stuff and picked up a switch panel that goes in front of the shifter.

My ARB compressor came with a rocker switch. I bought a couple more for my driving lights and dash cam.

I ordered them from OTRATTW. When ordering, there's an option to pay a little extra for LED's instead of the default incandescent bulbs so I chose that.

Now that they arrived, I compared them to the switch that came with the ARB compressor and notice that it has incandescent bulbs.

Now... some questions. They're all "lower independent" switches.

Looking at the wiring diagram for them, it appears I can hook up the bottom light to the dash dimmer circuit but that the upper light is powered from the input voltage when the switch is on.

Does this mean that only the lower light is dimmable and that the upper one will be at full brightness whenever the switch is turned on? This seems like it would be annoying at night.

I used a 9 volt battery to try to test it and noticed that the LED's are REALLY bright. Have I made a mistake with those? Should I order new incandescent ones or should I order another LED one to replace the ARB switch?

That's the reason I put all red ones on my switch pod. Red is far less bright at night. I used to have the RR pod with the multicolored switches. Red and amber were the only ones that weren't blinding. Blue was the worst.

I dont have mine on a dimmer for either side. They're on the a-pillar and dont bother me.

You are correct.
With the lower "independent" switch, only the lower light is totally independent of the switch. Wire #6 to the gray/orange wire down there by your door wire plugs, on the vehicle side, and #7 to ground, and the lower lights will come on and dim with your light switch. #8 is the ground connector for the upper light that is powered when you activate the switch.
I would replace the ARB switch with an OTRATTW led switch so they all look alike.
I used the led lighting in green on my locker switches and they look good, not too bright IMO.

So we're clear here... you're confirming that the upper light will be on full brightness when the switch is turned on right? It's not using the power from the dimmer that's fed to the lower switch?

It seems to me they could have wired it internally to use the same power as the lower light while sending the input voltage to the output.

Think of the upper light as you would a warning indicator in your dash. Those aren't dimmable either. I order all my switches to be the same color on the dimmable side as my dash and other lighting and the indicators are all red. None of them are overly bright but the red over green gives them an added degree of separation.

LEDs are not dimmable unless they support dimming by having special dimming circuits. I have the S-tech pod system mounted above the windshield in green and my one grip is that they are a bit too bright.

The switches I use from OTRATTW do have dimmable LEDs and can be wired that way or wired direct without being dimmable. This is one of the reasons everyone uses them.

I got the switches with white LED's so I can change the colour with the caps.

I got caps in both blue and green.

I guess I'll see how they look once they're installed. Even if they're bright, they're down low and out of the way so hopefully it's not an issue.
I can't say how bright these will be for you with white lights and colored covers since mine are all colored lights and clear rockers but I doubt there would be much difference. I didn't even know you could get them that way.

I have installed three green OTRATTW switches in my A-pillar. The lights are not at all objectionable to me. In fact, I can't really tell that they are lit during the day, and they are noticeable and readable, but not overly bright at night. I am quite happy with them, even without trying to dim them. Your mileage may vary, though.

Good to know!

I ordered all white LED's and they seem pretty bright when testing them with a 9 volt battery.

I'm sure they'll be fine. If not, I guess I'll order new ones. I ordered white so I could change the colour with the caps if I want to. I ordered caps in blue and green.

Incidentally... I dropped one... and it broke. :( Don't drop them.
