Bought a used JK, $2500 to fix the 3.6 "tick" from rocker arm?

First post here so please tell me how I managed to screw this up.

I recently bought a 2014 JK with 75k miles. I have the infamous tick coming from the driver's side of the engine and I was told today that I need a new head, along with everything in it (lifters rockers etc). From my understanding via WF and reddit is that Jeep had a recall on the 2012 and 2013 3.6's, but 2014's have a different issue with the rocker arms that end up being way less expensive of a fix. Really hoping to dodge a bullet right now. No warranty, bought it used "as is".

I attached the quote from the mechanic and the diagnostic codes came up as well, hence the throttle body replacement.

Why would I need to replace the whole head if it's just one rocker arm? And aside from opening the valve cover is there another way to be able to check the extent of the damage done by said rocker arm if there is any at all?

EDIT: $3700 is the total on all the work.

I really wanted to spend this money on more mods, and I guess gas? :(

Well, you joined a very expensive club. Welcome. I would get a 2nd opinion on what needs to be done. I had a slight tick at start up, changed to Pennzoil Ultra full syn 5-20. Gone.

Unless they tore it all apart they don't know what the problem truly is. It can be something as simple as a rocker that is bad. Check it out. Doing it yourself probably under $100.

Great advice Terry. That is why you use the best oil you can in the engine and change it often.

I don't see any "misfire codes" tipical for "bad head".
I would just replace the gas pedal my self and clear the codes if wont clear then throttle body.
Without a compression test I wouldnt touch the head.
Failed rocker (s) can make a lot of noise and potentialy damage the camshaft (s) but not the head.
Thank you. I'm going for a second opinion armed with these new tid bits.

Did you have those codes come up? Mine is also idling at like 500 rpm with a HEAVY vibration, when its warming up at 1200 or 1500 rpm, zero vibration. Once it's warm and drops down to the 500/600rpm mark it starts vibrating like crazy. Mechanic and other mechanic friends who live very far from here tell me that could be the IAC which I believe would be replaced with the throttle body? We checked all mounts its not the mounts, and no misfires that come up in codes.

The JK is definitely sensitive to octane fluctuations in the fuel, as well as voltage. I would start at the battery if you’re not experiencing a consistent misfire, or fail a compression on a scanner or combustion leak detection test. Shove the camera down one of the spark plug tubes to confirm or disprove the presence of coolant if pulling the plugs, doesn’t confirm it.

That’s just the starting price. No camshafts or rockers itemized in the bill.

Just did the tick fix and oil cooler upgrade on my 2015 jku sport, 1 new exhaust cam and all rockers, lifters, phasors and bolts all doorman parts. Now I have the #4 misfire, saw the injector plug looked odd so I replaced, still misfire, swapped everything to #2 still misfire #4, just did compression, 30psi. Wasn't a problem prior, just reached out to jeep and they want me to take it to a stealership for diagnostics to MAYBE be assisted with repair cost, 67000 on the clock. What a crap engine. Should have left the i6 alone!

This thread is a year old. What would you like an explanation on? The Pentastar Tick? It's a pretty well documented issue with the 3.6 motor at this point. Something wasn't right with the pins on the rocker arms at time of manufacture and they wear incorrectly. Eventually they loosen up and you start hearing a tick as the cam rubs on them. If you wait too long, they wear enough that they take out the cam lobe and that can cause misfires and such.
